I'm in the production right now, and this is the first time I've ever heard Hooverville. I don't recall it in either of the films, but is it on any recordings? I haven't even heard of the song. I can't remember reading about it here....whats the Hooverville situation?

It's not in either film, and it was cut from the revival.

Read a history book.

Personally, it's the best song in the show. The screwed up movie producers are, well, screwed up and screwed up by cutting. And that's not the beginning of the mistaks they made.

I love the Hooverville scnene/song!!! So much fun to be in, and to watch. I'm not sure off the top of my head which cast recording it is that I have, but it definitely has the Hooverville song.

Read a history book.

Aw, cut the Canadian some slack! Wink

Basically, it's a little slice of unpleasant American history that depicts a group of formerly well-off people who lost everything in the stock market crash of 1929, and are now living on the street in makeshift "towns" made out of old boxes and garbage. They called these pseudo-towns "Hoovervilles" after former President Herbert Hoover, who was President when the economy went belly up.

I agree though, the Hooverville number totally rocks! I specifically asked to be added to the ensemble on this number, 'cause I really wanted to do it (as did our actor who's playing FDR). We get to yell out "Stuff you!" and make rude gestures -- what's not to love?

I can't believe they cut this number from the revival! Evil or Very Mad

What does me being a Canadian have to do with anything? I know all about the meaning of the song, I want to know how often it's performed in the shows, because I didn't hear about it until I learned it the other day.

I agree with all of this. (Too lazy to type my own opinions, lol). I love the Hooverville song, and I was so disappointed that they didn't put it in the new Disney version of Annie, because it was so much closer to the stage show. I was hoping they would include it... When that song is removed, it sort of takes out the historical background of the show. This is during the 30s, and it's sort of foolish for the show to proceed as if the Great Depression never happened, and all poor orphans were adopted by billionaires. Rolling Eyes But yes, it's on the OBCR if you want to listen to it.

My apologies; it was not my intention to be condescending. I was responding to the "Read a history book" comment. Embarassed

To answer your other question, I have never seen a production of "Annie" that didn't include the Hooverville number. I think it's an important scene because it shows what was going on in the country at the time, and provides a good contrast to all the upbeat, happy, "sparkly" production numbers that take place in the Warbucks mansion.

Hope that helps a little more. And again, I'm sorry if I offended earlier.

That's pretty much exactly what I was trying to say, but I guess I'm not as articulate. Lol. Very Happy
