Who do you think is the best actress to have played Maria?
Mary Martin - Original Broadway Cast
Julie Andrews - Movie
Florence Henderson - First National Tour
Rebecca Luker - New Broadway Cast

I'm the only person in my production who thinks Mary Martin has a beautiful voice.

Julie Andrews, HANDS DOWN!!! Even though she's like old for the role, she just did so much for it... Mary Martin may have originated the role (and she did a great job, as did all of the ladies, but I haven't heard Florence Henderson), but I think Julie Andrews brought her up a whole nother level... You know?

 Many Maria's
OHHHH! ----- Florence Henderson - First National Tour -That's just plain scary! I don't even want to think about that! ewww! The brady mom... ----- Rebecca Luker - New Broadway Cast I have heard of her, and I heard she was pretty good. But...I haven't seen it on broadway so I can't judge. ---- Mary Martin- Original Broadway Cast Oh gezze, NOPE she's not getting my vote. She's alright. I liked her in Peter Pan, but I could never imagen her as Maria. ----- Audrey Hepburn-Possible Candidate I know she's not on the list but I wanted to bring her up. She was chossen, first in fact! Warner wanted to cast her as Maria but when she declinded the offer, they droped the project. (I'm sorry but I have to say this...) She sucked as Eliza Doolitle and I think she shouldn't have been cast as her, and I don't think she would have done any better of a job as Maria. Not that I'm ripping on her. I loved some of her other films Like Sabrina. But I don't think she's cut out for Musical roles. (some of you know this whole eliza cast thing has to do w/Julie...but enought w/that) ---- Doris Day---Another Possiable Candidate Some where, some how , some people at Fox had her in their minds as a possiable candidate. Oeofg- I like her very much but she TOO sugary. She would have made the movie over sentimental and too sugary sweet. ---- Julie Andrews-Movie Now this is the one that gets my vote. Julie Hands DOwn! She played this part perfectly. She mastered the art of well being Maria. Not that Maria was this sweet. but.... Theres also the other fact of the age, she was MUCH more closer in age to the character than, Mary Martin and even Audery Hepburn. And the fact of the romance story. This is a romance story after all, and play a woman in love was important. ---- Maria's Georg ---- http://www.geocities.com/jetcyer

Audrey Hepburn as Maria?! That would just be wrong! She looks too fragile to be Maria, and she didn't even sing in My Fair Lady. She was dubbed, and I didn't think the dubbing was very good at all in I Could have Danced all Night. Sound of Music would never have been as successful as it was if Audrey Hepburn had been Maria. Okay, I'll stop ranting here *deep breaths*

Audrey Hepburn: A Candidate for Maria
--- Yes, I know. A little weird, but she was hollywoods golden girl for a while back then. ---- About the Voice Dubbing Heres an interesteing fact if you already didn't know it. Julie Andrews played Eliza Doolittle on the Original Broadway Run of "My Fair Lady". She didn't get the part of Eliza Dootlitte, instead that went to Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn can't sing, so her voice was dubbed by the well know voice dubber Marni Nixon who did dubbing in for Debrorah Karr in the King and I and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. Marni Nixon's only on screen role was as Sister Sophia in "The Sound of Music" ---- Interesting...ah? ---- Maria's Georg
