we can't sing something from the show, so what would you recommend that has a similar feel? Thanks!

I would look at all the bit solo singing kids parts in shows and try to find an appropriate song that isn't over done. Castle on a Cloud will likely be sung for this part by many people...so avoid that. Same goes with a lot of Annie stuff, but there might be something in there that you could use.

I'd suggest something from maybe...Grease, like "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee". But maybe that's a bit too overdone. Another tip -- don't use uptempo 'pop' style songs. ('Sandra Dee' was the slowest song I could think of at the moment).

Home from BATB reminds me of Mary after she moves in with her Uncle, but might be too hard.

I have to admit I don't know much about the Secret Garden, but Mary is a child role, right?
Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee Lousy with virginity Won't go to bed til I'm legally wed
Not the type of song that would be sung by a kid.

Oh. I don't know the words. The tone is just Mary's sort of tone.

Mary is 10. It needs to be a child's song, or at the very least, a song with absolutely nothing suggestive in it.

do you need sheet music??? If not there's a song from an off-broadway show written by Kathy Lee Gifford called "Under the Bridge"...you can probably get the cd on amazon and maybe have the vocals reduced or if you can do it acapella...there's a song called "This House Where We Live"- a very "Maybe" from Annie style song. It would be good.
If you need to have sheet music- (If you are belty) how about "Waiting For Life" from Once on this Island.....or if you want something more solemn since Mary is very....serious I believe- try something along the lines of maybe the "I Love You" song from 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling bee- that may be a little bit closer to Mary's range too.....ummm if I think of any more I'll come back to this.
Hope that helps!!!

If you havn't auditioned yet, might i suggest "Castle On a Cloud" from Les Miserables? It is sung by a little girl in that show and would hit the mood of many of Mary's songs like "The Girl I Mean to Be" and "Round Shouldered Man." Also it has the orphan thing going on just like Secret Garden.
