 The 2001 Recording
I want to find this. It looks like I have to order it from Amazon.Com--but I listened to samples of it, it sounds awesome. Does anyone else have 2001 National Touring Cast Version? What do you guys think?

It's on iTunes. I don't like the samples I've heard from there.

I have the 2001 recording and adore it. I love the modernizing changes.

Is that the one where Sho Bean sings Bless The Lord?

Sho sings on the 2000 recording. 2001 is controversial for its often jarring revisions to the music, but contains a few standout tracks. First, it contains one of the only recordings of the little-used Overture (a hacked-together medley of instrumentals from the show, not a legitimate overture) and the "My name is known" section. Its "Tower of Babble" is set to a glitch-techno sound. Also notable is its gospel rendition of "We Beseech Thee," often considered to be the best recording of the song. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser, though the rest of the record leaves something to be desired. A better bet is the 2000 recording, with a more traditional, yet modern, sound on the songs. They sound new and improved for the times, yet lack the hammered-on hip-hop and electronica flavors plaguing the 2001 recording.

No. That's the 2000 off-Broadway, which I just bought and love.

I have the 2001 recording and I love it. I also have the original cast recording, which is...well, it's very 70's.
Question though.....did Stephen Schwartz write in "Beautiful City" for the revival? I really like that song, but when we recently did the show that song wasn't in the libretto. Just curious.

Stephen Scwhartz wrote Beautiful City in 1972 for the movie version of Godspell. He re-wrote the lyrics in 1993 for a production of Godspell to be set in the middle of the LA riots after the Rodney King beating

Beautiful City is not in the libretto. Directors are allowed to do it, but they have to find the music (not hard) and decide where it fits in the show (a little harder).

They don't always even have to find the music. It was offered to my theater group for a few more dollars when we rented the rights to do the show. We did get it but unfortunately my director decided not to use it.

 2001 Cast Recording
It rocks! It is one of the only cast recordings out there with Tower of Babel. WHich, beleive it or not, became one of my favorite songs. Also, the entire orchestration has been updated. Most of the changes are great, except for Turn Back which sounds like a cheesy 1970s porn soundtrack.Alas is a lot better and the rap before Light of the World is added. The BEST thing about the new version is WE BEseech Thee. It has been redone to make it a spiritual tent revival song. Loved it!
Hope that helps.
