Wicked: the novel or the musical?
which do you prefer?
personally, i prefer the novel...it's brilliant, and has a much more dark story. i was fascinated by every page.

The novel is totally engrossing, Its deep,Dark and Touching.
the musical is dreadful it makes a mockery out of the work.

The two are so different. I like them both, but it's hard to compare them.

well. I'm completely addicted to Glinda the Good, so, although I read Wicked about 4 years ago, I prefer the musical.

The novel is more successful with its dark mood than it would have been with a light, cheery mood.
The musical is more successful with its light mood than it would have been with a dark mood a la the novel.

I respecfully disagree.
I read the book knowing there was a musical based on it, and I was totally picturing a dark Les Miz/Miss Saigon feeling to it. .
I think the book's darkness would have been an asset to the musical. . though it would have been more artistically successful, rather than the financial blockbuster it's become. Yet, what's good isn't always popular. . and what's popular isn't always good. .
Sm**chies!

I'm not saying the musical would have been better with a darker tone to it... just that it probably wouldn't been as successful on Broadway. Family shows tend to do better than adult-oriented shows.

but in the long run..the more artistic shows become classics whereas the fmaily shows decend into mockery.

only by people like you who think their's is the only opinion that matters. Let's look at CATS, it's STILL the longest running musical... even if it is utter crap.

I find it so ironic that quote is in that book.
