 Scoring and Score
I still think that a major problem with the musical style of the score is in the orchestrations and vocal arrangments. Yes, the score isn't all that it could be but what is there could sound better and the show would benefit a great deal.
As far as alternative composers go, I don't think that a Jonathan Larson, Jason Robert Brown or Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein Wicked would work for me. Personally, I'd have liked to see it done by Stephen Sondheim or Michael John LaChiusa.

 Re: Scoring and Score
I'm sure if Sondheim had done it, it would have been much closer to the book -- much darker.

well ive never seen it, so i cant say too mcuh about it. I agree, some of the songs are not the best, but overall i like most of the songs on th soundtrack, personally, i LOVE dancing through life, but other people have different opinions, and also, some people know more about music and stuff than i do. so i wouldn't base judgement of the musical on my post if i had to, but overall, i liek the soundtrack, so it sounds good.

^Your education starts here.
Lesson #1.
"Liek" was originally spelled as "Like" and is most commonly popular in such fashion. "Mcuh" is commonly "Much" in most countries, where "i" when referring to oneself is capitalized, as are the first words in sentences.
Lesson #2.
Soundtrack applies to the music that plays during a Film. A CD that entails the music of a stage musical is called a Cast Recording.
May the force be with you...always.

I was listening to an "unofficial" recording of Defying Gravity and when Glinda says "here, put this around you", the audience laughed. Can someone explain the joke here?

It's not the whole cd, but I downloaded it off limewire. You can get videos, images and audios off of it. Also, YouTube is great for Wicked videos (I've typed in Shoshana in the link). I have watched Defying Gravity videos, but I just didn't get the joke, but now that you have explained it, it's kinda funny!

I just wanted to jump in with a question here regarding Wicked. I'm not a huge fan of the music so have yet to see the show, but I've been discussing it with someone who is really into the Wizard of Oz (which believe it or not I've never seen) and he wants to know what the situation is with Fiyero? From what I've read/seen on the show that character turns into the Scarecrow, and I was just wondering if someone could explain to me how that happened (if you don't want to spoil anything...you can PM me).
Also, if anyone knows and could clarify, what exactly happened with Idina Menzel hurting herself during Wicked? I know she injured herself and then returned to the stage in a red adidas outfit...what I was wondering was whether she injured herself on her last show, or just close to her last show? And whens he came back, was it because that was supposed to be her last show or was it because it was other cast member's last show?
Thanks,
Kelly

CAUTION: SPOILER(S)!
The story with Idina:
Idina Menzel was scheduled to leave Wicked on January 9th, 2005. However, during the matinee on January 8th, she fell through the trapdoor. During the melting scene, she is supposed to stand on a certain spot on the stage that really a platform that is then lowered beneath the stage. However, during that performance, the trapdoor had for some reason been lowered early, very far down. Idina did not see this and fell through the hole, cracking (I believe) 3 of her ribs. She somehow caught herself, however. An ambulance came and took her to a hospital and Shoshona Bean, the standby/soontobefulltimeElphaba did the final five minutes of Elphaba's part and the night show that evening. The next day, Shoshona Bean did what was supposed to have been Idina's final show. However, at the very end, when Elphaba is supposed to come out of the trap door again, it was Idina, not Shoshona! She was in a red track suit without makeup because she was in a lot of pain from cracking her ribs and could not get into costume/makeup. She sang the finale and made a special curtain call where she got flowers and Joe Mantello made a speech. Idina spoke, too.
Um...that's about it...unless you need clarification or want to know about Fiyero, etc.

 Re: The Sound of Music
This show has never appealed to me and I consider myself to be extremely open-minded and don't take shows so seriously, if not being too serious is their intention to begin with. This show, however, has always irked me, long before the hype.
I think you just pin-pointed exactly what it is about the show that doesn't sit well with me; the orchestrations.
They're too "exclamatory," they fluctuate erratically and produce a "feel for the piece" as a whole and not for the moment and what's taking place.
That really bothers me.
