The Artist (2011): 4.5/5 / A-
Michel Hazanavicius is to be congratulated. Making a silent film in 2011 is a risky thing, and he and his two charming leads succeed brilliantly. The Artist is a plot we've more or less seen before: George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a successful silent film star, but with the advent of talkies, his career goes to the dumps, just as the career of a young starlet (Berenice Bejo) soars. Objectively speaking, the plot is fairly tired, but it doesn't really matter. There is a special kind of magic in seeing a silent film in this day and age. When the old-fashioned title cards came up at the beginning of the film, I realized that I had been grinning uncontrollably from the get-go. The Artist is a homage to the long lost days of silent cinema, but it also honors a handful of films from beyond the days of the silents, including most obviously Citizen Kane and Vertigo. Dujardin is sort of brilliant, effortlessly carrying the film with his charming smile and killer sense of timing. Bejo is lovely as the young Peppy Miller; she creates a wholly likable character from one who easily could have been a somewhat terrifying stalker. The supporting cast (John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Missi Pyle, and a hysterical Jack Russell Terrier named Uggie) is great as well. Overall, there is a sense of joy in this film that is all too rare in modern cinema. It's not the most original thing in the world, and it certainly won't be studied years from now, but The Artist is a superb novelty film with a big heart.
Dir: Michel Hazanavicius

I got back from doing another double feature. First was the Artist*Which is FINALLY PLAYING AT THE CINEMA* It will get every Oscar this year! It will become a classic masterpiece! Then I saw the Woman and Black and...The audience ruined this movie for me.... Every other minute they were screaming there heads off. And yeah I know its a horror film but it's not Friday the 13th for gods sake. But from I managed to get through, it had a very good ghost story, it was well acted, and had great cinematography.

Saw Haywire.
Fighting scenes were good. And seeing the likes of Ewan Macgregor, Michael Fassbender, and Channing Tatum getting their collective asses beat down did have visceral satisfying moments.

But that's it. Not much of a script for anyone to work with. It's like Soderbergh wanted to make a Bourne movie but seemed to forget that there actually was a story, script, plot...things like that, that did make it in such movies. So, I can't say much about Gina Carano's acting ability, but she does seem to have charisma.

^^ LOLOL.... Get it! :)

Hmm... Most recently was "The Woman in Black" and I, too, had the experience of an annoying crowd- many teenage girls screaming their heads of off at the stupidest things. I had no idea this movie was a book and a play. whoops. I thought Harry- er, Daniel Radcliffe did well, carrying most of the movie as he did. Always nice to see Ciaran Hinds, too.

____

Can't remember if I wrote about "Haywire" on the previous page here or not, but if not, I liked it. It seemed a little long, and you could tell the woman was not an actor, but I thought she did very well considering her major experience was fighting, which was awesome. I did not like how the movie never explained why/when she got her hair cut. Bugged the poop out of me. Not sure if I'll buy the movie, but I enjoyed it.

Saw "Chronicle." About three high school kids that acquire telekinetic (or pyschokinetic for the purist) abilites.

Reminded me a bit of "Carrie."

It was well made and really illustrated the "great power/great responsiblity" schtick.

Those that posted in the "superpower" thread may like to see such power in action.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is one of the only films to kill me on the inside. It's just gut-wrenching. I'm not gonna lie. I got teary-eyed. That is amazingly rare for a movie to do that. Do yourself a favor and watch it. You will not be disappointed.

The Secret World of Arietty- what can I say, it's a Ghibli film. I expect nothing but the best from them, and this delivered. I haven't a doubt it will become one of their classics. Absolutely splendid.

Breaking Dawn Part 1: I never thought I would say this but............I loved this movie! This movies is amazingly awful! I was laughing out loud throughout this movie, including the vampire love making* A comical masterpiece by the way*, the way they stupidly try to make us sympathetic about Bella's plight about the pregnancy even though she is an evil monster, I loved how Bella's dad is just give this facepalming look on his face throughout this movie, and how Jacob is having this sick thoughts about loving Bella's child. I am so honestly shocked that I would ever like a Twilight movie.

Ha, do you watch the Nostalgia Critic? He basically said the same thing (about it being so bad, it's entertaining).
