A new, *special* category I hope won't see further additions :*Late Arrival/Partial Performance:Little Shop of Horrors (Late AND Partial)- Theatre For the Performing Arts - La Mirada, CA
Regional: McCoy Rigby Entertainment - 1 May, 2011
I made the huge mistake of trusting technology and used my smartphone's GPS feature for directions to the theatre, which is a fair distance from my home. I have seen one other show there in the mid-90's and I did not drive back then as I was a child, so it was like a first time. Needless to say, the GPS was 110% wrong and so I ended up lost and going in circles. I arrived at the theatre half an hour late.
I had also not been feeling well and had a thunderous cough, which I thought had been going away. A few minutes into the show, I had a coughing fit and spent the rest of act one trying to suppress an un-suppressible cough. I knew it was time to go when the lights for intermission came up and I got a whole bunch of dirty looks. I did not stay for act 2. First time I've ever left a show like that. I was devastated because it really was a top-notch production and I've never seen it on stage before. Plus, I had a great seat. Ah well. Spring Awakening (Late)- Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles
National Tour - 11 February, 2011
I had NEVER been late to a show before this performance. It was almost surreal to enter the theatre and hear the show in action and me not being seated in the auditorium. I was pissed. I had stopped at a gas station and my car seemed to stall. Then, I encountered unusually heavy traffic (you know it's frighteningly bad when you face such conditions in a city where traffic is ALWAYS bad) and ended up taking the streets out of desperation--best decision I ever made because I somehow made it there in 20 minutes from downtown and was only 10 minutes late to the show. Still, I was so upset, I found it difficult to concentrate on the show.

Re: Shows You've Seen On-Broadway, Touring, Regional
Sorry for the late reply. I need to explore this forum more. :S
At any rate, they all had their strengths and weaknesses. This show holds a special place as well, as it was only the second musical I had been exposed to (after Mary Poppins) and the one that really launched my interest in musical theatre.
The "A.D. Tour" was neat because it starred Ted Neely and Carl Anderson and the sis and I were already very familiar with the film version. Our three older brothers--Jose Luis, Fernando, and Gilbert--had been obsessed with the show as kids and had won tickets to the original Los Angeles production, which also starred Ted Neely and also played the Universal Amphitheatre (now re-named the Gibson Amphitheatre, ha!). I like hearing them recount the performance because you could tell it was one of the most magical experiences. Anyway, I was all of 14 or 15 in 1993 so our bro Fernando drove us there and tagged along. It was interesting because he had seen the original with Ted, so I was curious as to what he'd think of the 1993 tour.
Well, he isn't nearly as picky as I am, so he thought it was awesome. I had MAJOR issues with the new orchestration which made me pout for 90% of the show. Far, far more than Les Mis, the original orchestration for JCS is itself iconic and you just DON'T redo it! I can see removing some of that ultra 70's funk but how could you even consider ridding those famous guitar parts and the awesome brass and, well, everything! The new orchestration was very different in many songs and worse still the string section was completely synthesized. Oh the humanity.
The biggest sin was turning "Pilate's Dream" into some weepy lament bathed in synth strings. Pilate was played by Dennis DeYoung of Styx but I don't remember his performance due to the distracting re-orchestration. Ted and Carl were amazing together though. The production itself was a hot mess, with neon colors making it seem it was all taking place in some disco. I also remember these two queens next to us constantly complaining about Irene Cara--who had been playing Mary M. in the tour--being replaced by her understudy, who was really good. Irene Cara was a little before my time so it irritated me that they were so irritated over what was to me some random broad.
A.D. Tour was blah, but Carl and Ted made up for it and made it easy to see past the garish production designs and idiotic re-orchestration. The leads saved this one.
The 2000 Broadway revival was basically the one filmed and released commercially around the same time. I saw the same Jesus too (name escapes me) and he was all wrong for the role. I also forget the name of the Judas but he was OK. Kevin Gray was jarringly shouty as Pilate and Natalie Toro lent her silky smooth vocals to Mary M., which were appreciated and I found comfort in among the heavy grunting and gyrating of the ambitiously updated mess. I knew this production was in trouble when the apostles emerged in what appeared to be black leather gear and Jesus looked like some homeless guy at Venice Beach.
However, it remains the most musically memorable performance due to the incredible orchestra playing a very faithful adaptation of the original orchestration by ALW. I can't describe the feeling of sitting 2nd row orchestra center and FEELING that score reverberate within me. Even the ugly set design and foolish costumes could not destroy the feeling the original work produces in oneself when heard live. Orchestra and orchestration made that production.
But it was the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts' 1995 production that was the best overall. Very simple yet effective in design, with an excellent full orchestra playing ALW's orchestration, and a stellar cast (with an incredible Jesus), it put the other two big productions to shame. It was very straight forward and avoided what most productions of JCS suffer from--gimmicky, over-stylized and outrageous designs and over amplification. Jesus was a true rock style belter which did wonders for "Gethsemane," which was evocatively staged with Jesus center stage and simple lighting techniques that spoke more than the bloated updates that, in hindsight, seem so dated as opposed to the timeless approach of communication through suggestion that is so effective.
Hope that answers your rabid fan question.
