No More
Rant time. I've been re-listening to Into the Woods, just for kicks, and I remembered what a profound impact this song has on me. I remember a year or so ago, Jordan (Jman) had this story he liked throwing around about how he was in his friend's car or something and Raul Esparza's "Being Alive" came on the radio and he started bawling his little eyes out. Well, basically, that was me and my recent (as in 5 minutes ago) re-listening to "No More." This song just moves me like so few songs do, Sondheim or otherwise. It just asks so many of the hard questions over-analytical, angsty teenagers like me ask all the time (and, you know, hard questions adults actually care about too), and shows the Baker's pained giving up on everything. It's truly an incredible piece of theatre, probably the best song/sequence/anything in Into the Woods, and, in my opinion, probably one of Sondheim's best songs ever. Really, there I was, listening to it. About halfway through the Mysterious Man's part in the middle, I got a bit teary, and by "Like father, like son..." I was bawling like a baby. I MUST play the Baker someday. Ah, the beauty of Sondheim...

About a year ago, I was in a production of ITW. My best friend (at the time) was the Baker. Because I had an entrance through the aisle right after that, I would watch No More every night. Every night, I would start to tear up (and then go onstage right after. I was the Giant's Wife[since I'm only 5'0, they did they increased my shadow by like, 30']. haah)
Anyways- I love this song. So beautiful. This song and Journey On from Ragtime and Empty Chair at Empty Tables have the same thing on me. LOVE IT.

I'm right there with you, Elliot. I find "No More" to be a greatly underrated song. It's always been one of my favorites from the show. The scene is excellent for both characters involved and examines one of the show's many themes most efficiently.

Re: No More
I can't agree with this enough.
No More is one of the most heart wrenching male musical theatre pieces ever put to paper. Being a father really makes the song's message ring even more true. I hear it and my heart aches.
I have a chance to play the Baker (FINALLY) in an upcoming production this summer. I may go ahead and just do No More as my audition song. I've not wanted a role this bad in a long while.
