 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
This isn't a revelation to me, as I know the original orchs better than I know myself! But I've forgotten how beautifully "Fantine's Arrest" is orchestrated. In most recordings, you can barely hear the guitar but it's absolutely gorgeous on the rare occasion where it can be heard clearly.

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
At the risk of coming off as one of those irritating dude Eppie-boppers--considering all I post are OMO tracks--I shall post yet ANOTHER. Hooray!
And, no, it isn't the final version but...yet ANOTHER PREVIEW VERSION. XD
Not like I've progressed, or anything, lol. This is one of the first preview versions I ever made. Keep in mind I decided long ago to focus on this song due to its popularity, so it's a sort of primer for the rest which will see light sometime before my hair turns gray.
This one was uploaded to Soundcloud.com
I will probably be uploading my tracks here from now on. Much better than the weird, ghost town site YourListen.
At any rate, this track was uploaded a year ago. I had received a news email from the site and remembered I had an account with them. The track itself was tweaked a year ago but made waaaaaay back in 2004, which explains the craptastic strings and pathetic cymbals and timpani, although I sort of enjoy the electronically induced fullness of the synth strings. The ending is lacking the guitar and harp. Apart from that, a notable difference to others I've posted is it uses something very, VERY similar to the updated patches used in the 10th ann. concert, so the 'pingy' DX7 harp sound now sounds like the plucking of an actual harp and that grungy, growling synth so many people find offensively 80s and is the reasoning behind substandard orchestrations now sounds like a harpsichord keyboard patch, sort of piano-like.
I nearly fell over when I heard that french horn that is prominent during the lyric (in bold) "without me, his/this world will go on turning" because of how real and awesome it sounds!! I wonder where I got that sample from. Love the way it fills and dominates everything, as it should during that point. It just communicates something compelling that I can't possibly put into words. Love it, love it, love it.
Anyway, bask in the splendor of synth strings, slap on that trench coat, and weep under the light of the moon!!!

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
Came across a review earlier this week that positively spoke of the new orchestrations and I had no problem with it until it claimed they were superior to the originals which were heavily electronic. Talk about misinformation! The critic went on to say something like "and I think I actually heard the soft strumming of an acoustic guitar!" I turned a light shade of red at that point.
The originals feature gorgeous acoustic guitars throughout the show and is one of the elements missing from most of the new orchs.

It's a shame those guitars get lost in the mud on most recordings.

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
Yeah, you either have to actively listen carefully for them or only the higher pitched strumming is loud enough to make it through all the dominant instruments. It also has a lot to do with the way a recording is mixed, obviously, which is why I consider the Paris Revival album a wonder in its making even the guitars very audible throughout. It's a shame they didn't record Fantine's Arrest!
There are still parts of the new cast album I haven't listened to and I hope they didn't remove these guitars from this song. Even though they don't jump out at you in nearly every recording, their contribution is discernible in how the piece comes across as a whole. I think it's the heart of the song/moment. If I were to adapt it for a smaller orchestra with limited players, I'd make sure there is an acoustic guitar in there because I'd consider the sole guitar playing John's arrangement like in the audio I posted to be faithful to the original orchestration and the spirit of the piece, doesn't matter if the other 20+ instruments are missing. There are ways to make it work without sacrificing what makes it great.
I've stopped reading reviews of the tour because it seems every other one begins with a sentence or paragraph reassuring the nutty fans that the show is still an overblown feast for the eyes and the sound is still full and BIG and grandoise and pretty and it all still feels like a MEGAMUSICAL. That it still IS Les Miserables.
Clueless. So clueless. That's not why we like it at all and it isn't how we view the show anyway. Annoying. So I'd rather just hold off until it swings around; the reviews are irritating enough that I don't want them to cause me to shake my fists at the stage the moment I walk in. I'd like to give it a chance, be courteous, and wait until after the show. XD

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
Just did a comparison between the '03 Tokyo Blue album and the UK Tour, and the guitars are mostly gone from the new orchestrations in Fantine's Arrest, removing a lot of the metered forward motion from that moment in the score and turning the time where Fantine screams "You let your foreman send me away!" into part of a mush of overblown melodrama as opposed to a brief interruption in dramatic time indicating a great revelation for our main protagonist. Also, no loogie is hocked.

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news -- it's one of the moments that really gets my goat in the new orchestrations (moreso now that I realize *exactly* what's been bugging me at that moment), right up there with the re-assignment of the cello line to the *entire* string section/auxiliary keyboards/a Mac in the Work Song, the removal of the counter-melody from the Soliloquies, and the bumblebees buzzing over the sewer chase.

I love Fantine's Arrest, the acoustics are absolutely gorgeous - I quite like them in the TAC recording, too. Nice arranging you got there! I have Sibelius and I arrange music for fun sometimes. I'd help out, but I'm not quite sure exactly what I'd be doing.

 Re: On-Going Orch Tracks Project
Glad you enjoyed the track, Mister MSam. My arranging is aiight, although I need to figure out why there are extra notes. It will sound a bit less 'busy' when I clean it up.
I can't live without my Sibelius. I've tried many others, and it is KING!!!
The 10th Anniversary Concert is fantastic for listening to the guitar on. Even though it isn't audible all the time, it is much more prominent than on the Broadway or London recordings where the synth takes center stage! I love, love, love how super prominent the guitar is during the 10th ann. intro to "On My Own." I was so used to the synth being so loud on the other recordings when I first saw the concert, I was shocked the intro almost seemed to have been rewritten. The guitar's strumming is so beautiful and evocative!

Yes. I'm aware it is 5:35 a.m. on a Monday morning, and I have all of an hour of sleep left before I have to get up to get ready for work.
But it was worth it because I spent that time producing this:

So beautiful. Tells stories on its own. It made me cry!
*sigh*
