 Female Prologue Narrator
If there was no other way, would it be appropriate to have a female Ensemble member do the Prologue narration?

I don't see why not, unless someone here can give an intellectual explanation of why it has to be a man.

How would a female narrator add to the show?

 Re: Female Prologue Narrator
That's not the issue. I'm talking about if the director decided not to use the narration track from the OBC and a proper male substitution couldn't be found. Adding or detracting from the show has nothing to with it.

I don't see why one should make a change though if it does not play into the production concept. I find it hard to believe a single man cannot be found. Is the entire cast female? Can one of the ensemble men not record a voiceover? We had our bookseller from the opening number stand backstage with a mic and do it live each night.

How does having a male narrator add to the show? What would be taken from the show by having a female narrator?

I don't know ... I say it doesn't take from the show, per say, but I guess the voice in the beginning could be the Beast telling what happened, indirectly, to the audience ... that's how I sometimes think of the opening. But I don't know anything, don't quote me.

 Re: Female Prologue Narrator
If you're thinking that it's perhaps the Beast telling the story indirectly to the audience, perhaps if it were a female chorus member, maybe that could be Belle telling the story indirectly. I don't see how it would be a problem, it might add a nice touch to the show, make it a bit more gentle. I'm not sure though.

In the high school performance I saw, a teenage girl played the Narrator.

I cast a girl as my narrator. It doens't specify AT ALL that it has to be a male.

 Re: Female Prologue Narrator
I think this works as well. I saw it done with a female narrator who narrated from the perspective of the witch. It didn't take anything away from the show. In HS where there are typically many more girls in the production it allows another person to have a speaking role. I'm not sure I would do it in a professional production.

 Re: Female Prologue Narrator
I've personally never seen it that way. The film track was recorded by the same Actor as Cogsworth. However he is clearly using a different voice, so I don't think it has ever been meant to be anyone in particular. IMO the sex of the narrator is immaterial.
