What do you guys think? I have to give credit to the costume and makeup crew. Wasilowska looks nearly unrecognizable as Jane. Genereally, the trailer gives me a pretty positive impression of the film. The acting looks good (you can't go wrong with Judi freaking Dench in the cast), and the only flaw I see is that Fassbender's obvious good looks will probably render lines like "Do you think me handsome Jane?" "No sir." kinda silly. But It's something we've had to live with many times before in a Jane Eyre adaptation.

Thoughts?

You pretty much summed up my thoughts. Of course I'm excited to see it.
It'll probably spawn a whole boatload of musical fan videos from the Jane Eyre musical fans, which I would love to see! ;)
I wish they had made her hair darker though, but since they had a brunette Blanche, I understand. I can't remember what the descriptions are in the book (if any)
Can't wait for the proposal scene! :)
Oh, and uh... Billy Elliot as St. John? hrmmm.... :?

It looks good. It certainly seems like this version will be truer to the book than, say, the '90s Zeffirelli version. Kudos to them for casting both Jane and Mr. Rochester with known but not A-list actors. I've never forgotten the essay I read in one edition of the book about how all the movie versions tend to put more emphasis on Rochester than Jane, and the fact that most of the previous versions cast unknown or lesser-known actresses as Jane alongside much more famous Rochesters definitely reinforces that argument. Maybe this time the emphasis will be more on Jane where it belongs. :) Though I see they still couldn't resist casting very attractive people in both roles, though they've certainly done their best to make Mia look plain.

Isn't Jane described in the book as having "hazel" hair and Blanche as having black hair? It's been a long time since I read the book, but I'm pretty sure those are the descriptions, and I'm glad to see this movie being true to the source instead of going the Zeffirelli route and having the cliche contrast of a dark brunette Jane and blonde Blanche.

Gotta love the Never Trust a Trailer moment near the beginning (yes, I spend too much time on TVTropes.org). They make it look like Jane runs away from Lowood and finds refuge at Thornfield when she helps Rochester after his riding accident. When of course that's not at all what happens, and those shots of her in the rain are probably from her time on her own after she leaves Rochester. Why does Hollywood do that anyway? :?

I am so looking forward to seeing a Jane Eyre adaptation in theatres. It doesn't look so far like it'll surpass the 2006 version in my mind, but it looks great nonetheless, and I can't wait to see it! :D

Vanessa, I don't remember any time where her hair colour was described, although it's brought up a few times that her eyes are hazel. It's been awhile since I read the book though, and I think the general assumption has pretty much always been that Jane's hair is a mousy brown.

As for the attractiveness of the actors, I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that there's really no such thing as an unnattractive A-lister (except for Margaret Hamilton in the old Hollywood days). The closest they got was Charlotte Gainsbourg, and she's not that terribly well-known in the English-language film circuit. They also got lucky that Victorian era costumes looked so horrendous on her, and played up her very pale skin and sort of mousy hair. Once I let go of that, it was a lot easier for me to appreciate a good performance.

I'm pretty sure that Mr. Rochester describes Jane at one point as having "hazel hair and hazel eyes," and then her narration adds an aside that her eyes were actually green. It's been a long time since I read it, but I distinctly remember that.

Post Re: New Jane Eyre Film and Trailer
I'm a random 'Jane Eyre' nerd who stumbled upon this thread whilst Googling 'Jane Eyre hair colour' to prove my point that the casting of this film was terrible. My boyfriend said to me, 'but does it actually mention her hair colour in the book?', and I couldn't work out whether it did or I just had a picture of her built up in my head. Anyway, I searched the Project Gutenberg ebook and got:

“...This little sunny-faced girl with the dimpled cheek and rosy lips; the satin-smooth HAZEL hair, and the radiant hazel eyes?” (I had green eyes, reader; but you must excuse the mistake: for him they were new-dyed, I suppose.)"

So, yes, you're all right. :)

How did I have no idea that this movie was being made?! I love Jane Eyre. At first I got really excited and thought it was the musical, alas, I think this one looks pretty good. I do agree, I'm really happy I didn't really recognize any of the actors (except Judy Dench).

I still say that Alan Rickman and I would make the perfect Rochester and Jane.

Post New JANE EYRE Film and Trailer
Here's the trailer from YouTube, which I found loaded far quicker tha the one from Focus Features itself:

I think the trailer feels rather bloated myself. I was pleased to see Mia Wasilowska looking like she does in costume and makeup. She looks like a "Jane". Other than that, the trailer gives me the impression that the film itself could go either way.

Yes, one can. Perfect example: the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film, although Judi Dench was a highlight and a welcome respite from Keira Knightley's lip quivering take Elizabeth Bennet. Other examples: The Chronicles of Riddick, Die Another Day and Home on the Range. Not that there was anything wrong with Dench herself, but the films themselves are another story.

Does it matter that the Zeffirelli compressed and changed events in the book when the result was still a film that was engaging? I have not seen it in a while, but I remembered enjoying the film a great deal.

Not really, I guess. Faithfulness is never the only requirement for a good adaptation, but still, it's always nice to see.
