 Re: RENT photoshoot!
I absolutely love that you took a new direction with it. I like it, I think that you clearly know more about Cantonese culture than we do and have visually appealed to that and still (as you claim) kept the essential unglamorous elements of the story.
Just a thought, since Mark is already a narrator type character- are the translator narrators like his film crew or something?

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
hmm really? maybe its just the picture, check out these two. p.s he also played mark in a professional production of RENT in Las Vegas. lol sorry im kinda confused with the thing about Angel, Shanghai etc etc....can you explain that again? lol but btw Hong Kong is not Shanghai, google it. I just wanna make clear that these are just PR photos, as i mentioned before the costumes arnt finalized yet....so stop being so critical...i know its very different but isnt it your job as a musical junky (im assuming everyone is one here) to be open to different interpretations? we didnt completely remake the characters, if you look carefully from the facial expressions, background, and even costumes in the photos then you can still see traits of the original characters coming through. Thats such a good question! Well our director created these two characters as mark and rodger's loft-mates, so they are always around lol

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
Pardon me, I didn't read the posts carefully and thought you were referring to Shanghai, where there has been a new influx of theater in recent decades, rather than Hong Kong. My apologies. That aside, I have something to say about this: "Stop being so critical." That's interesting wording, because you posted these pictures asking for our opinions. I'm just offering mine. As you saw in my initial post, I really liked some of the looks but felt they were applied to the wrong characters. I am in no way opposed to a different interpretation, although I do believe that from what I've seen this one is very out of touch with the original story of starving artists in New York. I just think that, as with any early stages of a production, there were some things in design worth taking a second look at, and I pointed them out. If you didn't want our frank opinions, you shouldn't have posted work-in-progress pre-production shots with costumes that aren't even finalized. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. When I spoke about Angel, I said that s/he was fine as is. That means that I liked the costume that I saw right off the bat, and didn't think any real changes needed to be made. Obviously, we haven't seen Angel in drag yet, but that's very good and on the mark for the manly milieu, at least in terms of the concept this production seems to be trying to portray. As for your Mark, I understand that he may have played the role before, but in looking at those shots of him in action, I'm sorry, but with the design concept you came up with, I'm not seeing the nerdy awkward filmmaker conveyed in the material. I see someone who looks more like how I would picture Roger, with a camera. Meanwhile, the looks displayed for Roger and Mimi just strike the wrong note with me. Roger looks like some cross between Seventies glam rock and punk, with the face paint and what I call an "angry goatee"; Mimi, well I don't quite know how to describe her look, except to say that Maureen's costume suits the character better and even (perhaps unintentionally) has echoes of Mimi's original look (the pants, etc.). Note that that is not me clinging to the original, just that I don't see how anyone would find the look you gave Mimi attractive. I certainly wouldn't give her tips at the strip club, but maybe that's just me. Take my suggestions or don't, I don't really care. But don't ask for opinions and then tell people with logical criticisms to back off.

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
I don't think saying they're "just" PR photos justifies much of anything. Isn't the point of these kinds of photos to generate publicity and buzz? And, inevitably, criticism? That's like owning a bakery, putting out tiny bits of brownies to try for free, and then telling people who don't like them that they shouldn't criticize because "they're just samples."

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
woah...no need to get defensive....I wasnt dismissing your opinions or telling you to "back off". I just didn't see you first post as constructive/logical criticism since you just said "scrap it" and "mark looks like rodger" with out offering any explanation or suggestions....my reply was just asking for you too reiterate your points (which you have, so thank you). And when i said "stop being so critical" I didn't mean that i cant take criticism, i was just saying you could have given your response in a more respectful and constructive way, by just focusing on the negatives doesn't get anyone anywhere. But thanks for your opinions and constructive criticism i personally agree that Mimi isnt very attractive in her costume, but thats not up to me to change thats the director and costume designers decision. when I said "just PR photos" I wasnt trying to justify anything, i was just informing you that this may not be what is seen on stage, something that you guys dont really seem to understand.

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
Those photos were amazing! I like that it's a different take on the show and I would love to see the production. Not a huge fan of having a riot on the actual stage, but it did look really cool. Btw, you looked awesome as Angel.

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
I think it looks awesome actually. Well done!
The script doesn't dictate the costume so what difference does it make if some characters look different to how we have previously seen them?
Mark is only synonymous with the stripy scarf because Antony Rapp wore one in the OBC yet most productions have him in one! Originality is a blessing sometimes.

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
Ah, for the second time, it's not me being fanatically devoted to the original. Frankly, I could have staged it better on a smaller budget with stuff bought in thrift stores had I been of age at the time. It's because they took a story about starving artists and turned it into what looks like a cross between a glam rock concert, a leather bar, and a "scene" party. Only some of the sets at best even roughly approximate the actual setting of the show. Say what you will about originality being a blessing, but maybe next time they should actually pay attention to the script. If this is how the homeless and starving artists look in Hong Kong, then I'm moving there, 'cause they clearly know how to take care of their people!

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
I'd like to point out that, based on what I've seen so far, this production owes the majority of its design to the original as far as sets are concerned. I know nobody really said it, but in case anyone thought it, that aspect isn't that innovative. But I do enjoy the more gritty look of the set.
Costumes are fine, although maybe a tad too similar looking to each other. The original costumes became iconic, not because Anthony Rapp and co. happened to wear them in the original, but for the way they helped define and give each character personal flair and individuality.
There are far more compelling reasons other than mere familiarity that explains people's love and preference for aspects of the original production.

 Re: RENT photoshoot!
It is interesting. However, I am somewhat baffled by Maureen's blue pants. Come on, Mimi wears the blue pants, we all know that. It just seems a bit confuzzling.
I dunno. It's interesting. I like it. It looks like a fantastic show with a lot of energy. Powerful.
