Remember when we saw that together? Judy Kaye was brilliant!
For me, Judy and Patti are pretty close. I guess I'd have to say Judy might win over, because Patti has has other performances which were better (not saying that her Lovett wasn't fabulous, it's just that her Rose and her Evita were more fabulous)

I admit there are several versions I haven't seen, but I would find it difficult to locate a performance which would outdo Angela Lansbury. She's amazing.

Wow, this is a somewhat old thread, but I 100% agree. Kaye is my 2nd favorite. It always astounds me how varied her credits are. And she was a doll at the stagedoor. Angela Landsbury is forever in my #1 slot.

I prefer Angela, no one can top her! When I saw the revival with Patti, I wasn't that excited. I just like the crazy Lovett...
When I saw the movie, I almost had to cry. HBC what have you done?!

Can you be more specific about HBC?
I think singing-wise she wasn't great often, but can you see the character of Lovett in Tim Burton's movie played by someone such as Lansbury? HBC's Lovett was appropriate..

That's what I've thought. HBC's singing was blah but her acting worked for the screen and how Tim Burton worked it. Angela would have looked too over the top in the movie theatre.

I must admit that Angela would have been over the top in the movie, but I want to see Mrs. Lovett as the crazy and weird woman. How HBC played the role worked for the movie but it wouldn't work on stage. And I know that I can't compare the movie with the stage version but... I'm stubborn and so I compare the movie with the stage version even though I shouldn't.

Lansbury would not have been over the top in them ovie. the only way she would have been is if she was directed that way. Lansbury is an Oscar nominated actress..she knows how to act on film.

(I'm sure I made a post in this thread... )
I loved Helena's Lovett. Sure she played it subtle but that worked on film and in Burton's style. Her Lovett was great and a close second to Lansbury.
