 Interesting casting for Pippin
I was reading on Stephen Schwartz's website that he likes the idea of casting a sullen sort of Goth-ish teenager for Theo. He says that some of the lines and the whole duck storyline are funnier. I'm trying to wrap my head around that.
However, I am kind of liking the idea of double casting Charlemagne as Berthe. It's kind of a Monty Python-esque twist on things, sort of like the headless man.

Charlemagne and Berthe being double cast is one of my favorite conceits used in Pippin. I think it works very well. Theo, too, works better as a teenager, especially with the revised "alternate ending" now being the show's definitive end according to MTI's release of the show.

I'm really torn on the Theo casting.
I love the idea of having a little boy in there and all that comes with it.
But I also like the idea of an overgrown little boy in the form of a sassy pouting teenager too.
A little boy singing Corner of the Sky would be precious.
I don't know!!
I'm casting it this week!!!

I mean, why would Pippin sign up for a life with a bratty teenager?? Or want to help him with the duck??

The "small boy" is ironic, like everything else anyone says in the show. The ideal Theo, I think, would be Angus T. Jones, who plays Jake on "Two And A Half Men." Overgrown, obnoxious teenager with a bit of arrested development.
And the point of the whole "teenager" thing is to have the Pippin story start again as it ends, with another young man searching for a purpose.

Very true. I think maybe a medium aged kid, like you said about the actor from Two and a Half Men.
I suppose though, if I am double casting the King/Berthe, might as well go all out cynicism and fun and ridiculous!

Hmmm ... I don't know ... the cuteness factor of having a little boy who loses his duck introduces some genuine pathos, which makes a nice blend and contrast with the more "fantastic" and magical elements of the show.

Are we talking like the Mordred in the Lincoln Center Camelot last year?
Ahhh. I'm not so much a fan. I don't really see how a sullen teenager would bring Pippin out of his funk.

Maybe by being negative and sullen, he can out-gloom Pippin and make him give up?
XD
