In order to kill several birds with one stone, I'd lock Joel Shumacher in a closet to keep his grimy little hands off the script.
To be fair though, ALW DID say that Shumacher could cast ANYONE he wanted so long as they did their own singing...his fault for being too liberal.

We need to reverse this and say ONE thing we would NOT change. Pretty hard.

I'd change the cast. I think I could live with the film if it was properly cast.

I agree. The cast for the film now is just ridiculous.

Christine's vocals are more important than the Phantom's.
I would change the director
AND/OR
switch Emmy Rossum with Rebecca Caine.

Switch Emmy Rossum with just about anyone.

^ Except Sarah Shiteman. Easily the 2 worst Christines to date.

I would replace Joel Shumacher with Tim Burton. Holy moly, that would be a movie to remember! Or any other qualified director.
Shumacher really ruined the POTO movie, with his desperate "It hazzz to be sexy" and lame directing. But hey, what can one expect from the man who insisted on giving Batman nipples...
I'm not overly excited about the cast either, and definitely not the costume and set design. Overall the movie is fluffy and glossy and soulless, and not even original (too much "borrowing" from other sources - like Disney, "Angels in America" and "Amadeus"). I realize all could not be fixed by changing ONE thing... But another director would surely be able to come up with something better than today's shameful fluff. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm a Phantom fan when people mention that movie. Bleeeeh.

But I guess he expected them to be able to SING by putting that as his only demand.... And look at the shrieking model faces Shumacher dug up.

Tim Burton would've been an interesting choice. He certainly would've made that film darker. I was thinking recently that Francis Ford Coppola might've been a good choice, (or at least done the film better then Shumacher) considering he's had experience in directing both gothic love stories (Bram Stoker's Dracula) and musicals (Finian's Rainbow.)
Shumacher said himself that he had never directed a movie musical before, therefore he should've not been chosen to do something as big as The Phantom of the Opera.
I also agree with the fact that Schumacher sexed the film up way too much-I was talking to someone recently about the movie and they said the excat same thing.
