If You Could Change *One* Thing About the Movie...
I saw this on the Sweeney Todd thread, so I thought I'd ask here. If you could change one thing about the 2004 movie adaption of the ALW musical, what would it be? (I know there's a thread about changing the musical itself, but this one is strictly about the 2004 movie.)

 The awful POTO film...
The screenplay. Or the director.
There's too about this film that just doesn't work to narrow it to just one thing...
Later days

It's hard to pinpoint one thing as there's lots (and I speak as somebody who likes the movie!) - but if forced to choose just one it would have to be...
Get rid of that cringeworthy sword fight!

I think the only thing that needs changing is the position of the chandelier crash. I think it was too abrupt for it to crash at the end of Don Juan Triumphant.

I'd give Murray Melvin's character more material - he can be so creepy (watch Torchwood, end of days (series 1) - he's "Billis the Manager")

The director.
It's really difficult to change ONE thing...

Yeah, I know it's a hard choice, but I would choose a different director too. I would never have chosen Joel S. to direct a musical!

First thing that springs to mind is to replace Christine with someone who can pronounce 'angel' the long way.
The other big thing is that I'd remove all the cuts to the Phantom during All I Ask of You. It totally ruins the suspense - you should be thinking 'aw, how cute, he's her prince charming and she's saying yes, innit lovely' right up until the very end, when it should smack into you like a ton of bricks that the phantom's been there THE WHOLE TIME and saw everything. That should be a moment of 'whoa shit, that changes things - they're in for it now...'.

The only problem with looking for a better director is that so many of them would have done a good job with different things. For example, Baz Luhrmann (one of the other choices on ALW's list) would have turned out a terrific Masquerade sequence, but I doubt that it could have been much better with everything else.
