Upgrade/Downgrade?
My college was supposed to do a production of SWEENEY TODD next September, but unfortunately our creative team lost the rights, so they're doing KING & I instead. Most people involved are considering this a downgrade; I personally haven't decided yet how to feel about it. I'm more familiar with SWEENEY and consider that Sondheim's dramatic masterpiece. KING & I is a little more foreign to me. I saw the movie when I was relatively young and at that time it proved to be a little more than my attention span could handle. However, in my researching of KING, I've come to realize that on an emotional level, it's top-notch, in terms of R&H. At any rate, I wanted to ask you all whether this should be considered an upgrade or a downgrade. Thank you!

Please. With THE KING AND I, you're doing a CLASSIC. "Sweeney Todd" is such a pretentious piece of sh*t that only the most diehard Sondheimheads like. I bet half your audience would date Todd!!

Oh man, King and I is a classic and is one of the best musicals out there. Sweeney Todd is good, too, but the thing is that there might be so many people that would go "OMGSWEENEYTODDAUDITIONBECAUSEJOHNNYDEPPWASINTHATMOVIE" type. With King and I, savvy musical theatre people will be more involved with it.
That's just my two cents.

Personally, I consider it an upgrade.
Classic musical - one of the absolute best!
