 Audition Help Please!
Hi, I'm new 2 this forum so forgive me, I'm sure these questions have been asked n answered.. My school is producing 'Guys and Dolls' and I need help.. I was wondering-- what would be a good choice of music 2 bring for the audition? I am a soprano (and a strong singer, I might add), and, while my dancing skills are decent-- if we're talking Latin (Cumbia, Guaracha, Merengue, a lil bit of Salsa, oh n sum tap) I don't think that will help me much for this play)..
I am a beginning actress and I don't know if this is really for me, however, I want 2 give it a chance! I've wanted 2 act since I was a lil girl and have been in a few plays (when I was younger). Anyway, I am guessing that I should try out for the role of Sarah, in which case I am wondering-- what song should I sing for the audition? What would be appropriate? I am loathe 2 admit I have never seen the play or movie version, so I really don't know much about the character. If any1 out there could help me out in any way, I would *greatly* appreciate it!
Thank you so much in advance and sorry 4 rambling-- nerves I guess =)

for some info on the charachter: (I don't know how much you know, so I'll give a general overview) Sarah is a worker at a mission, trying to recruit the city people to Christ and such. She goes to Cuba with Skye Masterson (who asked her out as a dare/bet sort of deal) and accidently "lets loose" a little. She ends up falling in love with/marrying Skye, etc.
For songs to sing...I really am not good with these things, but I might do something of Marian's from the Music Man or the song Martha Jefferson sings in 1776. Again, though, I'm really not the best at audition songs.
Good luck, I love Sarah's charachter!

 Thanks!
Thank u very much for your help! I really appreciate it (I can use all the help I can get! =) Thank you for the description of the character of Sarah-- sounds great! I will have 2 find the sheet music for the songs you mentioned...
I know you said you are not good with the audition music part, but do u know if any songs from, say, a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical would work? I have the sheet music for 'Oklahoma!', 'Carousel', 'South Pacific', 'Cinderella', 'State Fair', 'The Sound of Music', 'The King and I' etc. as well as 'Showboat', 'My Fair Lady', 'Oliver', I think 'Bye Bye Birdie', oh and 'High Society' (thats sorta in the vein of 'Guys and Dolls', right? at least that song about the horse with the 3 guys singing).. mostly older (but fantastic!) musicals. I spent 13 years playing the piano so I've got quite a collection lol
Anyway, thanks again for the help.

Oklahoma, I'm not sure about... I haven't seen it in a looong time.
Carousel-depending on different versions, the girl sings the song "If I Loved You", and that would be good.
Cinderella-"In My Own Little Corner",
State Fair-not sure, can't remember any specific songs, but I love the movie and am sure anything sung by the main girl would work
SoM- Kind of overdone, but if you were going to do something I would do "Something Good"
The King and I-"Hello Young Lovers"
Showboat- (One of my favorite shows ever) "Make Believe" and mayyybe "Can't help lovin dat man" "Why do I love you"
My Fair Lady-"I could have danced all night"
Oliver-mayybe "As Long as he needs me"
never seen Bye Bye Birdie or High Society.
Hope I helped!
Good Luck.

 Thank you (again)!
Paradox in Pink, u have been *such* an invaluable source of information-- I'm so new to all this, the theater, auditions, etc. I have talent, I just don't know how best 2 show *off* my abilities.. At least I am learning, learning 2 be less nervous, more prepared etc, w/every audition I go on.
Anyway, the audition was last nite, so I wound up going with 'Life Upon the Wicked Stage' from 'Showboat'. I guess I did *SOMETHING* right because they let me go into the second verse (we were only supposed 2 sing 16 bars) and afterwards told me I have a "pretty, clear soprano voice'' (unless that's code 4 something else..)
Unfortunately, I didn't get 2 read your post until just now.. I chose 'Life Upon the Wicked Stage' because it's a jaunty, entertaining song, and the lyrics are fun ('Life Upon the Wicked Stage ain't ever what a girl supposes..wild old men who give you jewels and sables only live in Aesop's Fables..I got talent, but it ain't been tested, no one's even interested!" you get the jist, I'm sure Also, the sheet music I have 4 it starts off on a G note and goes up an octave, so it showed off (a lot) of my vocal range.
Anyway, I chose that particular song because I figured it might be appropriate for 'Guys and Dolls"-- was I wrong? I agree with ur recommendations, the songs you mentioned are fantastic and excellent song choices..I'm just so new 2 this-- is it better to go in with a song that is in the same vein as those in the play you are auditioning for or does it matter??
Sorry for such a long post-- I'm a bit emotional rite now i guess! I thank you again for all your help, you've been really great =) BTW, Showboat *is* awesome-- it's 1 of my favorites as well! Hopefully I'll actually get a part someday .. callbacks are 2day, so they posted the list at midnite (tho they said specifically to me that they would call me because I live in the next town over and they didn't want 2 have 2 make me drive back). I don't get it, everything went great, the singing, the dancing, my monologue.. plus, the feedback I got was so *positive*.. I just got this vibe that I might possibly actually get a callback, which I've never felt before.. it's just kinda disappointing
Oh well, I guess I'll pick myself up and try again! I hope 2 talk with you again soon =)

eh. that's too bad. It sounds like you did wonderful-it seems like you chose a good song, but like I said I'm not great at these things.
better luck next time, I guess.
