I've always seen it as though she is starting to crack.

I always thought it was because she was listening to the echo of her voice since she is in a empty theatre. So I guess her own words were hitting her

She's not in an empty theatre in her mind.

It's because she's starting to go over the cookoo's nest.

Post Re: rose's turn
Dear "Gypsy" Fans,

It's actually because her own mother abandoned her, and she's remembering the abandonment. When she faces the concept of motherhood in broad daylight, she's able to B.S. her way through everything, and to be as overbearing as her own mother was neglectful, but when she's under that single spotlight, trying to be the star that she was never encouraged to be, she remembers the way that her own mother abandoned her, and she has to face the tragedy of how her own pitiful concept of motherhood was shaped over the years.

The real tragedy of Mama Rose may well center around the fact that she is not only a slightly lustful woman who's searching for love, and a power-hungry woman who's searching for stardom, but a little girl who's searching for a replacement for the mother who abandoned her so long ago.

Gosh! Now I feel really, really sorry for this character, but, then again, that's easy to do once you know her back-story. :(

Thanks in advance for your replies.
8-)
