A close-ish regional dinner-theatre near me is producing "The Sound of Music." My dance director at a studio where I take musical theatre told me that she believes I definitely have a chance at Liesl... her family is prominent in choreography at this theatre, and I trust her opinion. I have six years experience with theatre- however, this would be my first professional audition, and I'm quite nervous. The auditions won't be until August, but I realize I am up against both Equity and non-Equity actors who are much more experienced for the same part... so I want to be as on-top of it as I can be.
I am an 17 y/o mezzo, and decided to look for Rodgers and Hammerstein songs that displayed Liesl's character and were in the age range... Unfortunately most of the songs seem to be overdone that fit what I need ("In My Own Little Corner", etc.) So I was wondering if Rodgers and Hart would accomplish the same goal, since Rodgers did the music for both?
The songs I'm considering:
"It Might As Well Be Spring" - State Fair
"My Funny Valentine" - Babes in Arms (I'm still searching Rodgers and Hart for songs, but I'm having trouble finding a lot of them, lol. )
Both of these are (obviously) ballads... should I have more of up-beat songs for such a up-beat musical? Or do you think ballads are fine? Do you have any other suggestions for a mezzo to sing for this role?
I do hope making this it's own thread was correct, and not obnoxious... Thanks for peeking! Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a curious cat.
Thanks a bunch
