Post Which song is a better choice for Pirates of P audition?
Sometimes this theater says to audition with a song from the show, or at least that it's OK, but for the next one, Pirates of Penzance, they just said "sing a song in a legit style"... I was thinking either "Art is Calling for Me (The Prima Donna song)" from The Enchantress or Blanche's song "The Finer Things" from Jane Eyre. I don't know any Gilbert and Sullivan songs. I have about a month, but need to figure it out soon so I can practice. Thoughts?

Which part are you going for? If you're going for Mabel you'll need something that shows off coloratura skills. But still, there are plenty of good G&S soprano songs to choose from, like "The Sun Whose Rays" from The Mikado, and... that's all I can think of at the moment...

I think either of the songs you mentioned would show off the right part of your voice for this show, although I'd be inclined to pick "Art is Calling for Me" out of those two as it's closer to the G&S operetta style. That said, it's a pretty well-known piece for sopranos to use (at least it is in my area, not sure about yours, obviously!) and if picking something that's not overdone is a priority for you, then I'd use "The Finer Things".

But if you do have time to learn a G&S number, then I'd go for that option :) "The hours creep on apace" from HMS Pinafore is a favourite of mine ... I'll let you know if I think of anything else!

Not going for a certain part, really, though I think Edith would be the best for me. It looks like, from the audition notice, that they are only casting 5 women- Mabel, Ruth and three sisters. ??? So just hoping to get in at this point. Overdone and ettiquette is not really an issue, although I try not to break any obvious auditioning rules. I know "The Finer Things" very well, but don't have the music, and I only half know "Art is Calling for Me", but have the music. Probably don't have time to learn an actual G&S song, but will look into the one you suggested, Brackynn! :)
