 male/female audition songs
The other day my brother was working on "Corner of the Sky" with our vocal coach, a song I love dearly. And I was wondering, would I ever be able to sing that in an audition (after changing it to my key of course). I'm a girl, and although it is traditionally a male song, there is nothing in the lyrics that constitutes that it has to be a male singer. So, do you think its ok for girls to sing songs for male characters, or guys to sing songs for girl characters? I'm just looking for your opinion on the idea, I'm not actually singing that song.

 Re: male/female audition songs
I would say it's okay in some circumstances, but it's rare. Definitely don't sing Corner of the Sky though. It's crazy overdone for guys, and I don't think it would make it better if a girl did it. Also, there are a million great songs for women out there, so you shouldn't need to sing a guys song. I would say it's okay to sing a guys song if it's a show that almost no one in the world knows (or a song that was cut from a show, etc etc) and if you don't have to change the key (it works in your octave too).

Yeah, I'm not actually using "Corner of the Sky", but when I when I heard I thought, hey, can a girl sing a guys song, or vice versa? I wonder what directors would think if they knew taht the song was written for the opposite sex.

 Re: male/female audition songs
any audition workshop i've ever been to, they've always said specifically to not use a song in which the people judging you wouldn't be able to picture you in the part- i wouldn't say this is always true because obviously not every girl who sings good morning baltimore (not saying anyone should sing this lol number one overdone song) is going to be a plus sized amazing dancer. the cool thing about an audition is that you can sing whatever shows off your voice and personality, like i'm a little white girl yet i could still audition with listen from dream girls, yet when you're a girl singing an obviously traditionally male song it pushes that a little too far imo
