Post JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT....HELP!
   Okay so I have auditions for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat soon. I really want the narrator, even though I have slim chances. The audition requirements are as follows:

Everyone is asked to prepare 32-measures (about 1 min) of a contemporary musical theatre song (you may sing from "Joseph" if you prefer). PLEASE no pop/rock. You need to provide clearly marked sheet music in the correct key. There will be an accompanist provided. NO acapella auditions please. If we are running short on time, you may only be asked to sing 16-measures.
"Joseph" is a rock-opera, which means that it is sung all the way through. Therefore we are looking for EXCEPTIONAL actor/singer/dancers.

They also provided character breakdowns, and this is the narrator:

NARRATOR -- Tells the story directly to the audience while interacting with the other actors; She is playing the role of Sunday School Teacher in this production of "Joseph"; Must have a VERY strong mix/belt voice and a magnetic personality.

So I have a strong belt...a very strong one at that....but I'm struggling to find a song that show range but is contemporary. Is "Don't Rain on My Parade" contemporary? I'm not sure...please help!

Well, the first song that popped into my head for this was 'Every Story' from Aida. It's contemporary, it's narrative-based and it showcases a strong belt voice.
However, im not sure if Aida is classed as 'rock' or not.
Hope this helps.

Though overdone, for a community theatre/high school setting, do "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast. It's mix/belty, legatto and contemporary. Done :)

Yes, I second "Every Story," if you're able to really belt. It's great for the narrator! Another good one might be something from "CATS," like "Bustopher Jones," "Gus, the Theater Cat," or "Macavity" because they're told as a story and have a similar tone to the narrator part in Joseph.

Basically, any song that tells a story would be great!
