Post Overdone - yes or no?
here's a thread to just ask if your audition song has become overdone lately. These things run in fads, so songs that were on the overdone list 15 yrs ago might have become obscure now i.e. Home from Yeston's Phantom was on every ones "oh no not again" list in the early 90s but i haven't heard anyone do that song in forever.

Here's what I've heard done to death lately:

Life of the Pary - Lippa's Wild Party
Anthem - Chess (can you believe guys still pull out this old chestnut?)
Adelaide's Lament - you wish she would die from that cough already
I'll Know - what's with the Guys and Dolls always?
Defying Gravity - and they do it keyed down to an easy key. do they think we don't know that?
Good Morning Baltimore - every fat chick think she has found her perfect song

OK so I'm thinking of adding Bus from Amarillo to my book - overdone? yes or no?

I've never heard of that, so, for me at least, that's not overdone.

my questions:

Your Daddy's son _Ragtime
you don't know this man_ Parade
The girl from 14G
Gold_ Camille Claudel

Frank Loesser is a genius. He wrote great songs and great characters with great ranges.

I'm curious about these two as well!

I don't audition much but when I do, these are two songs I'd like to work on. I'm using "Your Daddy's Son" for an audition on Saturday, actually...

Think of Me - Phantom
Popular - Wicked

basically don't do anything on broadway/west end at the mo or anything popular (and no i don't only mean the song by this! :D )

the director have had enough of thse songs, plus you need something to make you stand above the rest!

The best advice to avoiding overdone songs is to find other songs and lesser known shows by the same composers. Same style (generally) bt less popular.

You know more about MT than 99% of the posters on this board. If you don't know, we sure as hell don't! The only people who could probably give you any sort of informed advice on this may be shadowdancer, jazzy, flyinghome, deester, or some other MDN friend of Jazzy's who live sin NY whose name I forget... I don't think the rest of us are going to large enough or important enough auditions to know. SOrry to anyone I may be offending - but come on. Who can give advice to the Chev?

You Don't Know This Man and Girl from 14G are definitely overdone. I don't know about the Ragtime song, though. But if I were you I'd stay away from it just cuz you're not the appropriate age to sing it. You're 16. If you're auditioning at any theater that's not a high school, CDs will clearly be able to see you're not old enough to have birthed a child. Know what I mean?

And I've never even heard of Gold. What musical is it from?

The musical is Camille Claudel.
Linda Eder does it in concerts and such, it's really a pretty piece.
*sigh* I need good audition material.

Agree on all of the above for the most part, though I only know of a few people who really can sing 'I'll Know'.

I like Bus from Amarillo... I think Whorehouse is recognized but not overdone... except for hard candy xmas.
