If you are officially rejected by all 3, I would look into seeing if there are pre-music programs offered at any of them or what your options might be for reauditioning, but still receiving college level voice lessons in the mean time.

I know exactly what you mean! I've sang Anne before and I absolutely adore Now/Later/Soon and Everyday A Little Death. *sigh*

Northwestern.

So, you get into the music or theatre program first, and then at the end of freshman year you audition for MT.

How would one gauge if they could get into MT?

Would you do it based off of how many colleges you've gotten into? Could you?

What other ways could you figure it out?

Oh, GOD! Same here. There's this one moment in the "Now/Soon/Later" sequence when all three are singing together and I get chills EVERYtime.

I've been doing some research on Fredonia. Is there a lot to do around there?

By a lot to do, what are you asking? Theatre outside of school, or just things to do in general?

Fredonia itself is a really small town, but that's what I liked about it. It does have a movie theatre, bowling alley, Walmart, Martin's (grocery store) and that's about it. Well and it has the typical Denny's,Applebee's, and fast food type places. However, it does have a lot of small quaint little shops and things, plus a whole slew of bars and pubs. Fun when you turn 21 and good to have food with the family on visits. Oh and there's always the infamous Fredonia wine tasting tour LOL
Also Erie, PA and Buffalo,NY are each about 45 minutes from Fredonia, so there are malls and all sorts of things up there. Also Buffalo has a pretty good theatre district that gets a lot of the national tours, so there's good theatre there. There's also decent community/regional productions in Erie and the Buffalo area if you're looking to do a show during school, but outside of the actual school. However balancing that with the class schedule can be tough.

Also, you're about a little more than an hour's drive from Niagara Falls, Canada and about 2 hours from Toronto. So there's all that too.

Its actually in a pretty nice location. The whole town is basically the college, but you're a short drive from a lot of other things. Which is good if you have a car. If you don't have a car, the campus shuttle will take you around town and I'm sure you'll make friends within the first few weeks with people who DO have cars. I didn't have a car and it was never a problem getting places around Fredonia or going up to Buffalo or down to Erie on weekends with friends and I was NEVER bored between my class load and just having really great friends at school. Even if we stuck around Fredonia, we made things fun.

IM me at DivaKate5420 if you want to chat more about the school!

Hey, I just found this helpful page at Western MI University's website. I really liked the part about choosing a monologue.

I noticed that the original list for this post included Baldwin-Wallace College. I'm a sophomore MT at BW, so if you have any questions about the program, I'd be happy to answer them. A basic overview is that BW is a Conservatory within the larger college, so the Music Theatre degree is actually a BM (Bachelor of Music). BW students are known in NYC for their solid vocal technique and musicianship. That said, the acting training is also very good--it's definitely not neglected. The program accepts between 10 and 16-ish people a year, and they all do a showcase in NYC senior year.

BA or BFA for MT Majors?

The dance is definitely the weakest area of the program--it's only two days a week. However, some people find rides to Cleveland and such for extra dance classes. All the freshmen are in dance together, all the sophomores, etc...it's not separated by levell. But there is a HUGE span of dance levels in each class. We get modern, ballet, jazz, tap, and one choreography class.

BW is in Berea, OH, which is about twenty minutes outside of Cleveland. Berea is a pretty small town with not too much to do, but there's plenty to do in Cleveland. Freshmen can't have cars, but there's always someone else going to shows and stuff. Most of my friends and I like the location, because since there's not too much to do immediately around us, it forces us to focus on what we're doing while we're there.

Like I said before, since it's a conservatory program within the larger college, the degree is actually a Bachelor of Music degree (a B.M.), which is pretty unique for a music theatre school.

Feel free to ask any more questions--I love it here and the MT faculty and their connections are what make it the most valuable college experience in the field, in my opinion. For example, since I've been here we've had master classes with Bob Cline (casts a ton of national tours), the cast/writers of [title of show], the director of Avenue Q, Robert Longbottom (original director of Side Show on Broadway), Janet Lauer (manager to many, including Heather Headley), Dunja Vitolic and Eric Woodall (both of whom cast for Tara Rubins, who cast lots of Broadway and tours). And that's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Next year, Chita Rivera is coming! :)

I have a general question for anyone who might know.

I'm a sophmore in high school and I also have every intention of going into musical theatre or vocal performance, though I haven't decided yet. But at the same time, I feel like I should major in something that I can fall back on.

So my question is... Do most colleges offer double majors? I've been looking around on websites, but most of them don't really say much either way. What have your experiences been? Or what have you guys heard?

Thanks a lot!
Becca

Post The Second Step.
Alright. After taking my time.. and getting a fairly general overview of all the schools on my big list.. I narrowed it all down to what I'd tried to make a short list. It's since been renamed. here it is. As I get more in depth I'll try and post a bit of my actual information on here. Junior year is FLYING by. I'm getting so excited.
