Post COME FLY WITH ME: Twyla Tharp Meets Frank Sinatra
BroadwayWorld has news about a new "musical" from Twyla Tharp, which uses songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and incorporates 'original masters of Sinatra's voice':

Rialto Chatter wrote:
Casting notices for Come Fly With Me reveal that the Alliance Theatre cast is expected to make the "swing" to Broadway in Spring 2010. There is no official word of a Rialto production at this time, but the musical is expected to indeed hit the Broadway stage next year. Come Fly With Me is a dance-musical that, according to Alliance, "follows four couples over the course of one night falling in and out of love." Songs included are "Let's Fall In Love," "Witchcraft," "Summer Wind," "Body & Soul," "It's All Right with Me," "Take Five," "That's Life," "Nice ‘n' Easy" and "My Way."

How do you think this will fare against the other new musicals this season? And with a number of potentially strong revivals running too, will the Sinatra songs be a good enough drawcard for what essentially looks like a dance show? Will it be competitive around Tony time? Or is Spring too late for that?

It's another dance-ical like Contact or Movin' Out, but with pre-recorded tracks instead of the live band- presumably because Sinatra is "The Voice," and there's gonna be another Broadway show with a Sinatra impersonater in it at that time anyway.

Will it fly? Who knows.

Ah yes, another dance show that pretends to be a musical so that it can try to rack up things like Tony Awards. Well, there were only 2 nominations, one for Best Choreography, which is fair enough, and one for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, meaning that someone who was actually in a musical was robbed of the opportunity of being nominated. Oh well... at least it didn't rob a real musical of a spot or a win in the Best Musical category the way that Contact or Movin' Out did...

Well they don't nominate themselves, there is only one organisation to blame here.

It's not quite that simple. Sure, maybe they can be plamed for setting the precedent by making the first nominations and awarding the first wins of this kind, and for continuing to do so, but the shows themselves shouldn't be marketing themselves as musicals either. As far as I know, Contact is the only show of this kind that has not done so, at least not initially; the lable was forced upon the show by the press and the critics. As for the rest... [-X
