It touches on opera, it touches on rock 'n' roll. There are some real character driven songs as well, very unusual song types for us. It is a new challenge. The thing is we don't really like musicals. Most musicals are really pants. They're really not very cool. It is much more like opera than a straight musical. We're actually not calling it a musical for that reason because we don't want to put people off. We just thought, 'Well if we're going to do this we should do something that knocks it out of the park and hits on every level with great tunes'.

Arrogant much?

That is SO cringeworthy, I hope the score is atrocious and they are killed for it.

The vague comparison to Opera is annoying..can anyone think of why it would be more like 'opera' than a 'musical', and why this is a better thing :S?

In Bono's defense, the opera he is referring to is rock opera structure, with recitative in place of long dialogue sections.

He's not actively trying to write an opera like Roger Waters did with Ca Ira.

And to be fair, it's not that Bono thinks musicals are pants in particular. It's just that he's skeptical about anything that isn't Bono-related.

He's a tool, but he's also the so-called "Best Person in the World," so we kind of let him off the hook a lot.

I can only think of reasons that don't count in the show's favour.

Well, it was The Edge that made the comparison, not Bono. But the ignorance about musical theatre that underlies that statement is rather telling, I think. We'll probably see something very Lloyd Webber-esque: pop-style songs that accomplish very little dramatically linked by endless recitative that fill in the gaps. But is that the kind of score that Spider-Man elicits? Is this the best way to communicate the narrative musico-dramatically? I remain unconvinced, but we'll see...

Oh, by the way.... tickets are available from next month.

Later days
David

I have a friend who was in the running for Peter Parker for quite a while (Same friend as Drama Queen), and then for what's called a "Geek" or "Nerd" Chorus the show will have after they decided to go another route, which was likely stalling to make sure they could sign a particular actor (It's not Sturgess).

I'm told that all Spider-Man's major villains are in the current script. They basically team up against him. The villainess isn't so much a straight villainess, but a mentor gone wrong. She's a Spider-Woman called Arachne who grants Parker his powers and mission, similar to the character Madame Web from the Spider-Man animated series of the 90's.

There are, I'm told, some great songs, and some real dogs. The style was compared to RENT by my friend. More rock than pop. I also read something a while back where there was a preview performance of sorts of some of the songs, and one of them, called "Rise Above", got rave reviews from those who heard it.

I really don't think they will abandon SPIDER-MAN: THE MUSICAL at this point. There's been wayyy too much money sunk into this thing already. The budget has been publicy quoted at $35-40 million, and they've apparently spent half that already in deals for developing it. And with Disney taking over Marvel recently...the funding will pretty much be there.

If Arachne is in the show, I think Beth Leavel would be great for it.

I'm on the fence about Cumming as Green Goblin. I'm just worried that he'll take a great villain and turn him into a flamboyant diva a la Chris Sieber.

Yeah, but The Green Goblin IS a flamboyant diva in a lot of respects. :).

Can someone back this up? I tried searching Spiderman articles on Playbill and the search came up with none. I was just wondering, as our choir class will be going to New York for Spring Break. We're seeing two Musicals: One being the revival of Ragtime and the other one was Spiderman. I would just like to know because my director would have to choose another show. I'd like to persuade him into something I would like. I'd like to know what the current status of Spiderman the Musical is.

Last I heard it was on and some actors are still with contracts..but it is 'rumoured' on/off all the time, I think.

i read a list of all the shows opening through next year and Spider-man wasn't on there... but a lil further down in the mailing, spider-man was mentioned in the coming soon section with the preview dates.... so I think they're still pushing it.

Bono & The Edge = recording artists whose work is a pretty even mixture of genuinely inspired artistry and laughably embarassing wankery

Julie Taymor = director whose work is a pretty even mixture of genuinely inspired artistry and laughably emarassing wankery

Stan Lee = creator of "Spiederman", his work is a pretty even mixture of genuinely inspired artistry and laughably embarassing wankery

Am I the only one here who thinks this motley crew of genius-wankers were made for each other?

Most people I've heard commenting about this musical have predicted it will either be brilliant or a disaster.... but chances are it will be both.

My own prediction, if the track record of the Bono/Edge/Taymor and the nature of the source material is anything to go by - there's going to be at least a few scenes that are technically dazzling and emotionally moving, as well as a few that are self conciously arty farty and kind of wanky in their attempts to be deep.
