Music of the night, no doubt. Haven't listened so much at other ALW's than POTO, but that's the one I like best.

I've actually taken quite the liking to "If This Is What We're Fighting For" from The Beautiful Game/The Boys in the Photograph. The song is so moving.

It's easy to find faults with most of his shows but as a composer of pop music he's undoubtedly among the best of his generation. Musically, I think these are among his best, in no particular order:
Gethsemane
Waltz for Eva & Che
Overture to Cats
A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing to Waste
The Music of the Night (because of the bridge and those closing chords more than the main tune)
All I Ask of You
The Phantom of Opera (the title song)
Sunset Boulevard (title song)
All The Love I Have

Favourite ALW Songs --> THE BEAUTIFUL GAME
"If This is What We're Fighting For" is an incredibly effective piece of writing, not least because of the way it imitates the conventions of an Irish rebel song of the period. It is also one of the songs where Ben Elton's craftsmanship as a lyricist is better, with only one divergence from pure rhyme in one of the later choruses of the song. It's also such an interesting moment in the show because the first half of the song is sung a capella and develops so naturally out of the dramatic situation on stage.

 Re: Favorite ALW songs?
My very favorite is probably The Music of the Night, but I love anything else from Phantom, With One Look from Sunset Boulevard, Pie Jesu, Memory, Any Dream Will Do and the other songs from Joseph, Love Changes Everything, Seeing is Believing, and too many more to list.
