Post Schools' We Will Rock You
Has anyone seen or been involved in a school production of We Will Rock You? Does it work as a school show? What are the main challenges?

It is doomed to fail! It will never work in a school, because the score is incredibly hard! Students should not do it.

Post Re: Schools' We Will Rock You
I actually have seen people post on the We Will Rock You Facebook page about school productions they'd been involved in so I guess students have done it. I am actually trying to get my school to do it and would be interested to know any selling points I could use to get the drama teacher to let us put it on and any challenges I'd have to find ways to rectify. (I suppose one would be the costumes)

Also, should it get the green light, I'd need some ideas for audition songs for each of the female leads (Scaramouche, Meat and Killer Queen) and some feedback on the ideas I have already. Just to clarify, I am a mezzo/alto and I need a song that can stand on its own in 32 bars. It should ideally be one that shows I can pull off the range needed for any role and it should be a show tune but the drama teacher's not hard-line about choosing a non-overdone song.

My ideas:
For Scaramouche, I was thinking of Bizarbra's part of The Beauty Within from Starmites ( from "I know I'm not pretty" to "If I found out you've been telling me lies")
For Meat, I was thinking of Maureen's part of Take Me or Leave Me from Rent
For Killer Queen, I was thinking either Acid Queen from Tommy or Last Midnight from Into the Woods (even though the latter , like my idea for Scaramouche, is not from a rock musical)

Any feedback on either benefits/challenges of a school production of We Will Rock You or audition songs for the various parts would be greatly appreciated.

Post Re: Schools' We Will Rock You
Although I was not personally in it, my secondary school had a production of 'We Will Rock You' during my last year there. I must admit that overall the results were rather mixed. On the one hand, the Queen material provides young talent a good opportunity to show off solid rock vocals. On the other, considering that singers such as Freddie Mercury and Brian May were responsible for the original vocals of these songs, the score will probably prove demanding on such young voices. Also, as the book's writing is - being bluntly honest - not particularly tight, a student production in particular may also encounter difficulties in moving as seamlessly between scenes as desirable. This was an issue in my school's production that caused some distraction, which obviously is not conducive to maintaining suspense of disbelief.
