 The Great Gatsby
So has anyone here seen Baz Luhrmann's new movie of The Great Gatsby? I'd heard all sorts of things about it and took myself out to see it yesterday. I really liked it!

 Re: The Great Gatsby
I really liked it too though not entirely perfect, it's a far cry from the disaster most of the reviews I read described

 Re: The Great Gatsby
The party scenes were just a bit much.... but I don't get why people are making such a huge deal about it. It was only like what, ten minutes out of a 2½ hour movie? Everything else about it, though, was wonderful. Beautiful film that really gets at the human element in the novel. I loved the performances.

I haven't seen it yet but I think I am going to see it sooner or later. But as far as I can judge from the trailers, it doesn't look like a great movie... I have read some bad reviews too... But some friends told me the music whas wonderful. I will post again when I have seen it !

 Re: The Great Gatsby
I wasn't terribly crazy about the soundtrack, but for the most part it was pretty non-intrusive. The trailer is not at all a good representation of the tone of the movie, it makes the whole thing look like a chaotic MTV video.... which it isn't.

Well, knowing the director, I don't know what people expected really. And yes, the performances were wonderful; I can't wait to see it in English so I can fully appreciate them.

 Re: The Great Gatsby
I had heard very mixed-to-negative things so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel. Almost didn't even go see it. But I gave in last weekend and ended up really enjoying the film. Mulligan and DiCaprio were really excellent and overall Lurhmann's direction was solid enough. And as always, Fitzgerald's story endures.

 Re: The Great Gatsby
One of the things I loved about it was how it barely changed any of Fitzgerald's original text.... just allowed the powerful words to speak for itself.

 Re: The Great Gatsby
Hotrribly cast, horribly shot, horrible soundtrack. see David Merrick's brilliant 1974 version with Redford,Farrow,Dern,Chiles, and Waterston. its a great adaptation with actors hwo know what they are playing and a director who understands Gatsby.
thi new film is an abomination.

 Re: The Great Gatsby
I hated the 1974 version. Way too dull and slow-paced, didn't get the spirit of the book at all. Roaring 20s? More like the Snoring 20s. The only good scene in it was Howard DaSilva's cameo appearance as Meyer Wolfsheim. Nearly everyone else except Sam Waterston and the golfer girl were miscast. DiCaprio captured Gatsby perfectly. (I can't wait to see him do Hamlet next!)

 Re: The Great Gatsby
I felt the opposite the 1974 film captured the noel perfectly..the whole piece was well cast..expertly cast in fact.. redford may have been a bit too handsome for Gatsby but apart from that it were impeccable. DiCrapio should stay away from Hamlet or any other great role..his range of acting is 'smirk, pout, frown". cant stand him.

 Re: The Great Gatsby
Personally I have always found Robert Redford quite overrated. I've never seen him really release into a character and take emotional risks. He is like the George Clooney of yesteryear, a Hollywood golden boy incapable of doing more than acting handsome and slick. Nothing about him was well-suited to the insecure, desperate, yearning, romantic Gatsby. I don't think he or Merrick understood the character at all. Redford essentially played Gatsby as a mythical, shadowy figure. DiCaprio was so much more real, so human. He totally got Gatsby's facade and the fragile, vulnerable man underneath. And Mia Farrow, her characterization was all wrong. She played Daisy like a vapid bitch. She didn't have a spark of the charm or charisma that made Daisy so captivating in the novel, no warmth, nothing at all that could make me see why he was so in love with her.
(By the way I strongly disagree about DiCaprio... I think he's a fantastic actor, a great quirky leading man with a lot more range and personality than Redford. DiCaprio can play anything from Gatsby to a retarded little boy, King Louis XIV, Romeo, Frank Abagnale and Howard Hughes. Redford is always Redford.)
