Only watch them with Rifftrax. They make the films even better.

Saw John Carter today. And whomever is responsible for marketing needs ot be smacked. I had low expectations, and thought the trailers rather dull, unexciting...

This movie was a big surprise in how near epic in scope it was.

This review says it best:

JOHN CARTER is the kind of story we rarely see told in film, despite its plot getting ripped off for a century. Writer-director Andrew Stanton (FINDING NEMO; WALL-E) has chosen to remain largely faithful to his source material, therefore, we get a piece of historical science fiction told from the point of view of citizens living 100 years ago. The science is beyond flawed (and if you judge JOHN CARTER on its science, you truly are missing the point), it features green martians with four arms shooting fancy versions of muskets, breathable air, and evidence of a crumbling city and dying planet that may yet be saved with the correct intervention.

You know what? JOHN CARTER is a whole lot of fun at the movies, and an experience that floods the screen with beautiful images and interesting characters. That's why I go to the movies people; the movie doesn't haven't to be perfect, but at the very least, it has to strive for greatness. This one doesn't always hit the mark, but it does a lot of the time. I've called for open-mindedness before, and maybe no more so than saying I think most of you will really like and admire JOHN CARTER.

Love Never Dies-

I went to the screening at my Local AMC...can I just say that this is how you film theatre. It was seriously a gorgeous filming. The show was fixed TREMENDOUSLY from London, and though it is very soap opera-y I now consider it the same as ALW does...one of his best works. It's now probably my second favorite ALW work with JCS being first. I was honestly shocked at how good this was.

So mad I missed seeing it in theatres (I'll have to go see Joseph to make up for it). I wish they didn't show it on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Eh, oh well. We'll get a DVD. Good to know they cleaned it up.

I saw Underworld 4: Awakening yesterday and I loved it! :)

I'm a huge horror and vampire freak so this was a must see movie for me :)

However the ending was very open so I hope a next movie will surprise us in the future :D

I loved the action in the movie, Selene is a massive strike-vampire and that's why people love her so much I guess. ^^

the war between vampires and lycans isn't over yet :)

Really? I didn't think they changed a lot of it.

I went to the screening of this show as well. I wasn't expecting a lot, and was surprised I liked it so much. The Coney Island setting worked much better than I imagined. It was the one place where the phantom fit in. I also liked Meg's character progression. All in all an enjoyable theatre experience and something I wish they would do more often with other shows.

Post Re: Review the last Movie you Saw thread...
Melancholia

Oh my…what a movie. I can’t think of a film that so draws me to it…yet repulses me in fear.

It stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Kiefer Sutherland.

It is an art film with lots of imagery but with a clear and solid story. I saw it three times. The first time I felt cheated by the ending, the second time I thought the ending was right, and the third…what a beautiful movie. That last feeling scares me that I should think that.

What fascinates me about the film is that it was inspired by the director Lars von Trier’s own bout of depression and its interesting effect on depressed people as they are able to cope with stressful situations.

The pacing of the film is a bit slow and tedious but with a very griping ending. It delves into the world of depression interspersed with music from Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” making it at times either dramatic or pensive.

I don’t recommend the film if you are feeling sad or depressed. It is an emotionally challenging film as it is disturbing yet strangely cathartic.

Spoiler alert

The film reflects Lars von Trier’s observation of how a depressed person can cope in a stressful situation. We see Kirsten Dunst’s character Justine at her wedding reception, trying to put on a happy face through her depression but it all goes badly with all the guests’ petty bickerings and Justine not following through on her ceremonial duties. A wedding is probably the ultimate in human ritual and artificial formality as the guests try to put on their best face while wearing such impractical clothing. So much effort to attach meaning to meaninglessness. In the end, everyone seems disappointed in not getting what they had hoped for in that evening…including the groom. It’s at the reception that there is a hint of some celestial abnormality.

The story picks up later in time. Justine at this point is almost debilitated in her depression. There is also a discovery of a rogue earth-like planet, Melancholia that will make a fly-by pass in our solar system. The name of the planet is of course fitting to the mood of the film.

Unfortunately, it turns out that Melancholia is not going to make a fly-by away from the earth but slingshot back and impact the earth. Justine is very fatalistic and accepting of the end in her depressive state.

The thought of the earth ending like this is just so disturbing. The film has sort of a nihilistic feeling as there are not thoughts of god or afterlife. Just an end to it all with the earth about to be destroyed being swallowed up by the much larger Melancholia. An uncaring, unfeeling universe about to obliterate all the wonders that is life on earth leaving no evidence behind that it ever was. My mind screamed for justice at the end but there is no judge to intervene. Justine tries to comfort her sister’s little son Leo by building a “magic cave” out of tree branches, erected like a teepee. Inside their pathetic little teepee, Justine, Leo, and his mother hold hands with the Wagner music building and Melancholia growing ever larger in the sky.

You are left stunned with no words. :(
