Bale and Sarandon or Hugh Jackman and Striesand
I personally like Bale and Sarandon. Sarandon has that hotness in her old age and such a diva personality. And she sings moderatly well. Bale sang in Newsies and imagine how his voice might have matured by now. And he looks like John Barrowman who has probably the best rendition of the title song out there.

Of these options: Bale & Sarandon. Don't know if Sarandon could handle the score, but she definitely could act the crap out of the role!!!
But I'd rather see Bale or Ewan McGregor playing opposite Meryl Streep!

I had never considered Susan Sarandon... I imagine she'd look like she did in Enchanted.
A film version of Sunset would be like a Broadway revival for ALNM, all the retirement home divas (the Streisand, the Streep, the LuPone, the Close) would be like kill each other. In which case LuPone would get it because she has the mafia on her side. Of course, Streidand has the Jews and the gays, and they own Broadway.
P.S. Anthony Hopkins is a brilliant choice.

Definitely Hugh Jackman and Glenn Close. I would actually prefer Debra Byrne to Glenn, she is a lot younger and can play Norma better, it's a pity she hasn't been in a film in over 20 years though...

I would cast Anthony as Cecil B. Demile and cast a celebrity who can sing strong as Max. Patrick Stewart for example or Kelsey Grammar.

I'd love to see Striesand/Jackman. I think that'd be awesome.
Plus, I'd cast Barry Dennen as Max (read his book and you'll see why). Anthony Hopkins as DeMille. Or maybe the other way around. I'm not sure what would work better.
What about the people who played Anthony and Johanna in the SWEENEY film? Maybe cast them as Artie and Betty?
Andy.

Hopkins is much more of a Max than a DeMille. stewart actually resembles DeMille more...or Sir Ian Holm.

Jackman, at 41, is too old for Joe. He's as old as Norma is supposed to be!
I think Patrick Wilson would be better for the role at this point.

Does the actor's actual age matter if it looks right? I think Jackman and Close would look amazing together.

Well, Joe's dexscription says "late 20's, early 30's." He has been working as a writer for some time and is street smart. He's also seen the ugly side of Hollywood, which leads to the layers of cynicism.
How old were Holden and Swanson in the film?
Andy.
