My highschool is doing Pippin this winter and auditions are in Dec. Since it is a hs performance, I know that age won't be a factor for female parts. I do want to know which parts have extensive dance or any dance in them. I am a good dancer but their are others better than I so I am curious where I would stand among them.

I finished up a production of Pippin about two weeks ago, and judging by our production, the characters who did the most dancing were the Leading Player, Pippin, and Fastrada. Of course, the chorus has to do a lot of dance as well, but if you were thinking about principal characters, IMO those are the three that dance most. (I was Fastrada.)

I actually danced as much as anyone, and I am a terrible dancer. I was a leading player (they divided the Leading Player among 4 of us, as a way to give more "good" parts... it was 6th grade. Everyone insisted that they didn't want one Pippin for half the show, another for the other half, because the previous year the main character was a guy for 1/2 the play, then a girl, then back to a guy... real realistic.) We did a dance for War Is A Science... I don't know what normally happens for that, but the LPs and I don't remember who else were up on stage dancing... a very rigid dance, nothing like ballet, but that's what the song required. I also danced with a male leading player during Love Song: Pippin and Catherine were sitting back to back on a box, singing, and during the chorus, we danced.

Point being: with a show like Pippin, there aren't "dance numbers" really, as far as I know, so the director will probably work with what he/she has... Our Fastrada could dance, so she did a little skippy thing and twirled something as she left singing "do-do-do-do-do" after Spread a little sunshine. If she hadn't been coordinated, the director probably would have had her do something else. The leading player is a very physical part, though, even if it's more movement than dance. I wouldn't say any roles had "extensive" dance things... but every production is different.
