Are there any restrictions, IE, number of measures you're singing or the tempo?

most likely its going to be a 16 bar audition...definately not going to be the whole song, but not confined to only 16 bars, it's not like they're counting....no tempo restrictions

Try a higher-range ballad. The auditions sticky has some great selections.

ok, I must be computer challenged here, because I don't see an Auditions Sticky thread. If someone could point me towards the right direction with a link or something, that'd be great

 Audition song
I just got Nancy at my high school not too long ago. We are just starting rehearsals now and I love it! It's such an awesome role!
It seems to me that a higher-range audition song would not be quite appropriate. Nancy is an alto, most of her songs are around middle c and are alto range. So a song that is in that same range is the best. I don't know what the audition song ways are at your school or theater but for me, I used As Long As He Needs Me. If you are allowed to use a song from the show then get copies to As Long As He Needs Me, It's A Fine Life, and Oom Pah Pah. Sing through them, get a feel for her character. Then pick the one that feels best for you, the one that shows off your voice and the way you can do Nancy's character the best.
If you can't use a song from the show then pick one that has that rough feel to it. Not a belty sound but a brassy, rough sound. That is Nancy. She's not nice, pretty sounding, pure, timid, or shy.
Best of luck! Let me know if you have any more questions!

An alto? As in, a true alto? Because I'm a true alto, and if that's what Nancy's being billed as, it's news to me. I always thought she was a mezzo.

This is true..you can call her a mezzo in my opinion as well. My director listed her as an alto. But her range goes from an F below middle C to a high G.
Whatever voice part you call that? I would prolly say mezzo as well.

Mezzo, who I've heard hit a few optional high notes. That's what I meant by higher range: a mezzo song that slips up in to soprano a few times. Sort of on the higher end of the scales and all.

She's a alto. It's a known fact.

LIES! Matt Henderson will tell you otherwise.
Maybe I really do just have whacked out amounts of estrogen in my system and my perception of alto is actually a female bass.
...that's deep.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, that's probably it: I'm probably a female tenor. Because several websites have a lot of parts I thought were mezzo listed as alto (Fantine in Les Miserables, Mei Li in Flower Drum Song, Madame Giry in Phantom of the Opera, Grizabella in CATS, and so on and so ON). And if that's the case...what the might F*CK have I been hearing?!
