For my school's first musical EVER we put on an award winning production of "My Fair Lady".
We made it slightly different from the usual, one of the main things being Eliza and Higgins falling in love (this will appall most MFL fans, but we did it in a subtle and clever way; you probably won't understand).

Our costumes were also quite different- for Get me to the church on time, the chorus girls wore black and pink dresses with fishnet stockings and the dancer girls wore pink sequinned skirts, fishnets, black corsets and a pink fascinator. The guys wore black tails, white shirt, white waistcoats and pink sequinned cravates. We made this our big number, having a giant pink love heart come down from the ceiling behind Alfie for the finish. It was a sexy spin on it. We based our dance break on Bob Fosse moves.

I really can't see any of that working in MFL, so I'm curious to see how you pulled it off. Definitely share some videos/pictures!

Costumes like that sound more appropriate to the Ascot Gavotte.

This is going to be very harsh. I apologize in advance, but I feel VERY strongly about messing with the classics, like MFL. Everything you need is in the script. This is not a personal attack, rather a rant about the tendency of people doing revivals to mess with stuff.

I hate this need for people to take perfection and try to mess with it and "make it their own"...such American Idol mentality. I'm sorry, but you really shouldn't have messed with it.

Shaw's intention was NOT for it to be a romantic love story, so why would you want to work it as such? Personally, I think it would make the story pretty boring. The fact that it's not a conventional love story is one of the best things about the play/musical. (Please see the thread about whether or not Eliza and Higgins were in love...It's actually quite enlightening.)

And the costumes just don't make sense. He's dancing with a lot of his old buddies...Why would they be wealthy enough to afford sequins/etc? Also, it's actually a pretty poignant scene because he laments to Eliza about the differences between having money and not. To make all of his friends richly dressed lessens his conflict. I kind of want to slap your dramaturg.

Sorry, but I just get upset when people try to take perfection and make it better...It rarely, if ever works. Perfect examples of how this goes wrong are the latest Bway revivals of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls...

And trust me when I tell you that this is a mild reaction compared to what you're going to get from Salome...LOL!

And GOD HELP YOU if you say anything in defense...because Salome will be all over that! LOL!

That is a sad fact...I've been lucky to survive one of her rants.........

LOL! But on this topic, I would pretty ruthlessly back her up! Which is very un-Jazzy-like...I KNOW!
