Post the lisp
I have a little boy trying out for the role of winthrop. I am wondering if you can offer any help on how to teach him to lisp properly?? I don't know how much to have him do it for the audition; whether the directors prefer it more heavily done and comical, or more subtle. And I don't know how to teach him the mechanics. If anybody has help with this, please let me know. Thanks!

I remember reading for Winthrop at the age of 7 and one thing I noticed is in the script itself all the "s" sounds are changed to "th". For example:

"Oh thister, thister, ithn't thith the motht thcrumptious thing you ever thaw? Oh thister!"

Something like that. Least to say my 7 year old self was confused (hey - I did get ensemble). Which brings me to ask, how old is the boy?

the boy is 7! lol. I also am not sure if he is too young to be cast for the part - most productions I have seen they usually go with an older kid, around 10-11. (Which never looks quite right to me. It loses some of the cuteness of the role when a kid that old is doing it.) He reads very well, but that might throw him off too. Thanks for telling me, because now I can give him a heads up on it! I actually was telling him to just make a "th" sound for all the "s"'s. I can help him learn the song, but when it comes to the script I won't have that ahead of time so i can't help him. Anywhere online where i can get some cuttings for him to practice reading with? Thanks!

the movie is actually really close to the stage script, if you can watch it beforehand.
EDIT- oops, I meant the old movie, I can't remember if the Cheno version is or not.

It's probablt true though. I haven't seen in it; only heard snippets...but Robert Preston and Shirley Jones beat Matthew Broderick and Cheno any day of the week no matter what it is you're watching...

I've seen both versions and the script in the Cheno one surprisingly sticks pretty close to the Preston version. I can't really think of too many changes they made in the remake.

I think the biggest change (not that its really relevent) was that they got rid of "Being In Love" and added back "My White Knight."

That is probably to do with Warner Bros owning the copyright to "Being In Love".
