We had a girl play Adrey 2 and it worked well!! She did a great job...the personality counts. You need somebody who can give the plant personality and that can eiter be a girl or a boy...it doesn't matter!!

when we did the show, a male was the plant, but his understudy was a female. She never went on, but if she had, the whole show would have had to take on different conotations, and then you dont get the correct feel for the show. It makes it look like the plant and Audrey are fightin for Seymour's affections, and thats completely wrong.

I think it could be done well if the girl's voice wasn't overly feminine

I just saw Little Shop of Horrors on Friday at my high school, and Audrey II was played by a girl. But it was a girl who has an amazing voice and amazing talent in versatility; both with her voice and in acting. I've seen her play Cosette in Les Mis and she was amazing, and then as Audrey II she was amazing. I almost didn't reconize her voice as the plant because it was so different, even though I saw her in Les Mis eight times and have seen her in many other shows. She just has this amazing voice, that no matter how many times you hear, always surprises you. I swear she is destined for broadway and will probably be famous. Anyway, sorry to rant so much, but since I've never seen the plant played by a guy, so I don't really know... They must've taken out the parts that would have been kinky between Audrey and Audrey II or either that I didn't notice them. But I pretty much agree that the person playing the plant needs to have both a powerful and amazing voice.

I think that Audrey II should be played by a male voice. If a girl had the right voice then fine, but ,you're right, the things said at the end are not appropriate for a girl to say to another girl.

I think that it would bring a nice new twist to the show if it were played by a girl because the audience doesn't actually see it and besides, it better conveys the vacillating Seymour does between the two loves of his life--Audrey and the Audrey 2.

hey i totally feel your fear on the girl thing. our school is doing it next year, and that is a fear of mine. The plant makes or breaks the show. i do agree with you in that a seductive deep voice is good to though. just how evil can be alluring. but it deeply depends on if you have that direct talent. but trust the director, and trust yourself. work hard and get that part girl! so then you can lead your coworkers and players and MAKE that show go on without a hitch. break a leg! hope all turns out ok.

Sounds cool to me... but my opinion is, and always was, a moot point.

Sorry but i disagree. Audrey II should be played by a man! Read the character description in the script.

Um, if it's a poll - shouldnt there be more than one choice??

Okay, when i recently saw this show in Detroit - semi-professionally by Wayne State University. They had a female voicing Audrey II and she downright sucked. Sang and spoke too high and no soul at all in the vocals.

My opinion is to stick with the script and the other casts of the past - black male. Thats the only way - in my opnion.

Oh now come on!! Limiting it to a black man? Unfair!! I am a white man, a big white man, but nevertheless a white man. And a tenor to boot!! However, when I voiced Audrey II I received numberous compliments where people said I was perfect. Not to blow my own horn, but I am just stating that it can be done by a white man. One theater patron said I even put Levi Stubbs to shame!! Now I don't know about that......but that's just what the man said. ok? Smiles!!! FEED ME!!!!
