New Tour Valjean - Peter Lockyer
This is fairly old news, but I don't think anyone posted it yet! http://www.playbill.com/news/article/16 ... s-Miz-TourLooking forward to seeing him when the tour comes to Orange County next month! I'll miss J. Mark McVey, but I'm always eager to see someone new!

Re: New Tour Valjean - Peter Lockyer
Heh, I met Peter back in 2008 when he was preparing to play Valjean in a community theater production in my town! (I live in Hawaii.) Unfortunately, I never got to see the production since tickets sold out quickly. Cool to know he's getting to play the role again, though. Peter's quite a nice guy, though I admit I haven't heard much of him singing.

Re: New Tour Valjean - Peter Lockyer
I read about this at BroadwayWorld and I think he'll do great. So he won't be the typical "type" usually cast in the role but does that really matter? Unless a role is iconic in a way that shaking things up adversely affects everyone's enjoyment of the show or the role has to be cast with a specific type in mind or else it won't work, all that can change is that Valjean will come across younger, not as stocky, and have a different style of singing all of which aren't absolutely required for Valjean to work. The stocky build does go back to the novel and there is his abnormal strength as well; however, I still don't think it's odd Lockyer has been cast in the role.
Back in his Saigon days, his voice was much higher but I do remember thinking his voice had both matured and noticeably deepened the last couple of times I saw him as Marius on Broadway. I always say that if someone of the style of Drew Sarich made for a believable Valjean, then most non-traditional types could, too.
I will not be attending the O.C. engagement, as much as I'd love to see how he fares in the role. Once of that cut n' paste job was enough.
