 "Jaded Mandarin"?
I contemplated posting this in my "Examples of bad MT lyrics" thread, but I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad lyric. But I really don't understand it: unless 'mandarin' has another lyric rather than the type of orange, I have no idea what it means. Can someone please explain to me what 'jaded mandarin' is supposed to mean?

 "Jaded Mandarin"
In the Chinese culture, a mandarin is a high-ranking public official. By calling Jesus a jaded mandarin, Judas is saying that Jesus has become useless as someone who represents the ideals of the people.

 Re: "Jaded Mandarin"?
Now that I understand what it means, I don't consider it a bad lyric at all.

Good question. As for knowingly basing opinions on a lack of understanding...no comment.

Oh, that makes so much more sense! My thinking was that he's so worked up, he's just yelling, not really caring about making sense. Or that the 'mandarin' has gone sour.... See what I did there?

 Re: "Jaded Mandarin"?
A "Mandarin" is another word for "high ranking official" or "bureaucrat" or "leader of an elite group" or "king." Even though Judas is pissed off at Jesus by this point, he chooses his words wisely and cuts Jesus to the quick. Let's not forget; the way the show is written, Judas is Jesus' intellectual equal. That's probably how it was in real life, too.
He's calling his friend (whome he clearly loves) a useless, stupid man pretending to be a leader.
Andy.

 Re: "Jaded Mandarin"?
Judas is not a stupid man in the show. He's followed other "Messiahs" before, that's the whole thing about "Heaven On Their Minds." He's seen this all before. Otherwise, he wouldn't have such a big issue with how Jesus is handling his fame... and believing his own publicity.
Judas was the right hand man in real life. He was in charge of the money, he questioned the woman in Bethany about the ointment and such. The other Apostles are blockheads and say nothing. I believe that Judas and Jesus had several conversations and arguments as a way of communicating with each other. Otherwise, why would Judas be Jesus' #1 man? I've also read in books that Judas is believed to have been the one non-Galilean in the Twelve. He also was a Zealot. So, he saw things differently.
In the show, he challenges Jesus at every turn. Sometimes, if the director so chooses, Judas can do some non-verbal "I told you so" things during certain numbers.
But yes, it's clear to me that Judas and Jesus were equals as far as intelect.
Andy.
