My high school is performing Guys and Dolls in a few weeks and we want to the the bit in Havana where Sarah hits the dancer over the head with a bottle, but all of the breakaway bottles we have found are too expensive for our budget. Does anyone have any ideas of how to do this scene in a less expensive way? Or is there away to make your own breakaway bottle? Thank You!

Breakaway bottles run about $100 per six. The alternative is to stage a fight that doesn't involve breakaway glass. That route was preferred the last time I did G&D, because we didn't have enough scene change time to clear the floor of the broken "glass" prior to the next scene. Sarah can jump on her back, or there are a million other ways to stage it. I'm sure the director has ideas.

Sugar glass is hard to make, especially in bottle form. I wouldn't go the do-it-yourself route on this.

Dont know if this still matters but our school used the breakaway bottles and I'll tell you it wasnt worth it
We had 6 and we couldnt rehearse with them at all because we needed all of them for our shows
Only the last 2 shows did we get them right
The bottles often broke before it ever hit the fighter's head (once actually flying and hitting another actor which was mildly funny) funnier though was that the fighter would apparently always pass our or something lol
I would say stage it so you dont have to use a bottle
Use a chair, club, or whatever
