I've seen an EXCLELENT high school production. If you've got the talent and a liberal area, I saw why not.

My current school did it the year before I came. From what I heard it was pretty well-accepted.

As long as people are open and willing to test it out and not rag on it or anything, I think it'd be an awesome show to do at a high school.

we have the ideal cast for it next year.

Sally is a dream role of mine.

I'd LOVE to do it...

very very doubtful, though.
Our past three shows have been 'Good News', 'The Music Man' and 'Grease'

doesn't seem to fit.

^^I too have a great cast for it next year. A phenomenal Sally and a great Schneider and a perfect Emcee (ME!)...*sigh*...my town is WAY too small to accept Cabaret...they certainly lashed out when Gypsy was performed.

If you push for it, it will happen. A couple of years ago, one of my friends really wanted to do West Side Story at the high school because Tony was his dream role. He kept pushing and pushing until the theatre department gave in and did the show, which turned out to be fabulous. And if it makes you feel any better, the prior shows were Grease and Hello, Dolly!

Also, here's an example of a HS production of Cabaret. These guys borrowed heavily from the revival, even so, not too shabby;

See, in my town, we would have to have the girls dress very conservatively. That wouldn't be the biggest issue though, the biggest problem with my school doing it would be the abortion thing.

Agreed. My schools past shows were things like 'Grease!' and 'Bye Bye Birdie' but at some point they did 'Cabaret'. (We did a revue last year honoring 10 years of theater at my school, and 'Cabaret' was the third show we had on the list). Also, we're doing 'West Side Story' this year because I pushed for it.

'Cabaret' can easily be done by a high school. If the admins are worried about it being too risque, it's understandable, but in my opinion, if the girls are sexy but not slutty, then it's acceptable.

but the girls in cabaret are sluts. you cant gloss it over. that plus the abortion scene and the smoking....it may not go over in an average high school. but in a liberal school that accepts it as art it can work well.

It really depends on the school. My high school, for example, would NEVER be able to pull it off without our administration having a fit. However, I did see an amazing performance of it done at the local performing arts high school. But, then again, key word "performing arts high school."

We're doing a production of it next year...and our theater program (if I may say,) is awesome. (Though we previously did Hello Dolly with the leads basically being pre-cast a year in advance, ew.) I'd be interested in playing the Emcee...though it sounds like a scary part to play.
