Hi guys or shall I say felines,

oddly enough after being cast as Victoria u/s Demeter (i know I still have to figure out how to make banners: I'm not that tech savvy sadly I was cast as Demeter not online and I am super excited. I thought what better place to get character advice than here.


I have read/heard a couple different things like she is the most skittish perhaps after a run in with macavity and is linked to Bombalourina (strong friendship) and Munkstrap (romanitcally?) but anything else you can tell me would be great. I know that I sing in Macavity and Grizabella the glamor cat and some other stuff (but in our production we are trying to give the ensemble more to do to spread the wealth a bit)!

anyway any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We start rehearsals this week for a july/august show. yay!

I do not have her Broadway/West End character, but then, your director is going to be the one to give you what they want. However, Guillian Lynne's interview on the video indicated that Demeter was wonderfully seduced by Macavity, and then raped, so she is really bipolar when it comes to Maccie. I witnessed Barbara King (New London) play Demeter, and you could see the conflict in her very easily during Macavity.... Anytime she had some non-vocal time, you could see her remember his caresses, and how he turned her on, and then she goes into revulsion and distaste.

Again, your director and/or choreographer will give you particulars. There is a major difference in the relationships between the UK and US version. The UK version pairs Deme with Munk, but Broadway tended to place Deme with Alonzo. So far, I have not seen anyone closer to Demeter than Bombalurina. Depending upon choice, they are sisters/best friends/even mother and daughter... Whatever reason you are given, Bomba seems to be very protective of Deme...

I'm fairly sure that Demeter is placed with Alonzo more often than with Munkustrap. Honestly seeing her put with Munkustrap in so many fanfictions etc annoys the hell out of me.

If it's at all helpful, a friend of mine is writing a fiction in which Bombalurina and Demeter both lived with Macavity's group originally, Bombalurina as his mate and Demeter as a newbie. But she put in something about Macavity trying to seduce Demeter, Bombalurina recognising the signs and then rescuing her and both of them running off to the Jellicles.

Great job on your role! I think Demeter is probably the most complex character to play, so I wish you luck. She's at once skittish, yet with an understated sensuality that makes her seem very attractive.

eee thanks. I'm so excited. out Alonzo and Munk are very cool. I don't know how much partnering there is going to be because there are some really tiny girls but either way it is going to be fun. our bombalourina is amazing as well. and jane your description is perfect <3 very helpful: all of you. is Demeter in back jazz shoes?

so I'm not sure what is happening relationship wise since our show is all over the place but our director told me that she was told that munkustrap and demeter are together and apparantly jemima is our daughter so that kinda makes sense. she didn't say anything about alonzo and i have no idea who i'm dancing with at the jellicle ball though. there is one relationship that confuses me though.

how does Demeter feel about Tugger? because they have me in that number and honestly I'm kinda confused.

Shouldn't your director know? Again, something that can vary all the time.

Jemima? Slightly random... I don't think I've ever seen her interact with Demeter. Ever. :/

Tugger... well the way I played it was that she thought Tugger was on the whole like-able enough, but reminded her too much of Macavity. We went with the whole Munkustrap-Tugger-Macavity being brothers thing.

He has longer hair, he's awkward, he doesn't care what anyone else thinks most of the time... yeah he acts too much like his brother in some things. She doesn't exactly run from him because there are far more differences there. But the whole Macavity thing was so traumatic that any resemblance, no matter how tiny, is going to repulse her.

Which actually might also explain some of her preference for Alonzo in most productions.

How did it go? Why not give us a rundown of what youre Demeter is like? I belive youre learned more than you wanna know about her by now...
